Back & Not Free Dragon

I'm back up and running, thanks to Isaac only minorly messing with us. Please keep the folks in New Orleans and the impact zone in your thoughts and prayers.

I also have a heads-up on something that Lifehacker has been nattering on about; in this article they claim you can get the home version of Dragon Naturally Speaking voice recognition software version 11.5 for free (pay $40.00 and then mail in two $20.00 rebates) or for $20.00 on another site. Yet when I followed the links it seems neither Tigerdirect or Newegg are offering the deals any longer.

I know internet deals can be taken down as quickly as they're put up, but as of right this moment you can purchase the Dragon for $35.95 here on purplus.net, which is a 50% discount, and as low as I've ever seen it being offered.

Everyone else make it through the storm okay? Let us know in comments.

  1. Glad you made it through Isaac, and hope the rest of the Gulf folks do as well.

I just bought my Dragon 11.5 (soooo excited) last week at Staples for $39. It was so incredibly reduced from the usual $99 that I couldn't resist. Now I just have to figure out how it all works.

    1. Got my fingers crossed for everyone, too. Also, thanks for mentioning Staples as a source for the Dragon, and good luck with the software. :)

  2. Hi PBW,
Glad to hear that the storm skipped by you and yours! I learned about Dragon Naturally Speaking from your blog several years ago and when I read this post, it reminded me that I had sticky-noted a site to send to you: Polyvore (link below).

When I came across Polyvore, I thought to myself "This is a site for PBW!"

So, finally, I've remembered to send this over to you:

    http://www.polyvore.com/

I was thinking it might serve as a writer's tool to pull together characters (the fashion part) as well as settings (the design look books etc) plus the art section just looked cool.

As always, thanks for all you do!

    1. Polyvore is an excellent place for writers and other creative folks to play -- I actually found it earlier this year and wrote up a blog post on it here, so you were right. :)

  3. Other than some aching muscles from last-minute tree removal beforehand, we've weathered Isaac just fine. I was still trying to blow him more westward to give Texas some rain, but I guess that's not going to happen. Hopefully Louisiana has their wading boots ready.

I've tried Dragon a time or two. I can't get over how weird my voice sounds. I know it could be a real writing help, though. So hrm... maybe I'll see if there is a trial version I can poke at again.

    1. With the Dragon you have to stick with it and keep working at it. It's not something most folks can do immediately, but in time (and with a lot of practice) you can start seeing the benefits.

  4. Oh~ I want to get Dragon Naturally so bad! I might have to cheap my budget on this one, lol. :)

It's sunny in the FL Panhandle right now~ but, excessively windy. We've put all of our patio things inside. New Orleans and everyone in the impact zone is definitely in my prayers. Glad to hear you and yours are doing well!

    1. I can't say for sure, but the reason the Dragon is being discounted may be that they're ready to release a newer/improved version (which will likely cost more, too.) Stay safe, Misha.

I am glad to hear you made it through in good shape. I am keeping the folks in other areas in my thoughts. Wanted to drop a line and thank you again - Rob Thurman's All Seeing Eye arrived today. I loved the book loop! Useful and lovely. My household and I do basically handmade holidays - do you mind if I use your concept? It would be a great stocking stuffers for all the readers. Thank you - I am looking forward to reading the book!

    1. Thanks for letting me know the package arrived, Shelley, and no problem with using the BookLoop concept. After I invented the design I wanted to share the idea because it's easy and different, so it's free for anyone to use, improve, make their own versions of, sell, etc. It's also a neat thing for kids to make because it's simple. So have fun with it. :)
