The Art of Pop-Up Books

I don't know how many of you can get to Maine before June 5th, but Bowdoin College in Brunswick has an amazing exhibition of pop-up books. Here's a video about the exhibition and a little of the history of this wonderful fusion of art and book (warning, plays a little background music and is narrated):

Bowdoin is also offering an online tour of the exhibition here.

  1. My neighbor went to Bowdoin College. I don't think he was in the the pop up book class though. I love those books. Own many of them I purchased for my kids. I have a great one of the country vet stories in English - All Creatures Great and Small. One of Winnie the Poo, Silver Bells in NYC. I'd like to see the Frank Lloyd Wright books.

Do you think adults like them better? than children

  2. You find such fascinating material!

Midlife Jobhunter, in my experience adults do seem to like pop up books better than children. It isn't that the kids I've known _dislike_ them - they just don't seem as mesmerized by images that leap up from the page.

  4. "Paper Engineer" -- that sounds so awesome. I loved pop-up books as a child and find them fascinating still. That video had me spellbound.
