2009 PBW No-Nos

Ten Things I Will Happily Not Do in 2009

Accept the things I am told I cannot change.

Laughing at the people who tell me this should also probably be avoided.

Allow Publishing into my writing space.

Like everyone else, Publishing will have to wait out in the livingroom until I'm done, and not put its feet on the coffee table or forget to use the coasters, please.

Believe people in NY when they say "This is your cover art."

(cough) Hey, have you heard that pink is the new black? Yep.

Even consider replying to an e-mail that starts off with "I read your blog every day, and I know you hate me."

The "who the heck are you?" response never goes over well.

Make fun of the buzzkillers.

Hold the wagon, I think I just fell off.

Quit hoping for the great big brass ring and keep collecting the little golden ones.

There's nothing wrong with being the only top 20 NYT bestselling author in existence who has yet to crack 50K on a first print run.

Release three e-books during a major holiday two weeks before a print release.

This is the new definition of stupidity, btw.

Take anything on faith.

Faith is nice. Four copies of notarized contracts are better.

Write letters of protest to President Bush.

I know I don't put politics on PBW, but I do have one thing I need to say: Bye, George. Don't let the oval office door hit you in the ass on the way out.

and finally:

Give up.

Never.

So what are you happily not going to do in 2009? Let us know in comments.

  1. I second the not giving up no-no with two auxiliary clauses: Don't give up hope and Don't give up doing what I/you/we love. The world seems pretty crazy right now and for those of us going through challenging circumstances, keeping a positive outlook is vital and keeping in touch with the things that spark our passion is paramount. Avoiding nay-sayers would also be helpful. Happy New Year!!

  2. The things I'm not going to do next year would fill a book. Let's just say I learned this year's lessons. But I think it can all be summed up in: I will not continue to do anything that makes me unhappy.

  3. I am happily not finishing a book that I find overwhelmingly dull even though everyone else I know thinks it's brilliant. I am also NOT stopping giving books to the office staff at the clinic because they are NOT bribes. Really.

(eyeing the physical therapy iron maiden knee of death contraption I was supposed to use this morning) Seconded, at least in spirit. ;)

Narcolepsy. I always blame my non-existent narcolepsy.

See, this is another reason I don't travel. Lol.

  9. This year, I will not waste time. I will not waste time daydreaming instead of writing. I will not waste time worrying. I will not waste time wondering "what if?" when the what if is totally out of my control. And, like you Lynn, I will not give up.

  10. Yours is a great list. And quite fun :).

Mine is a biggie and I'll probably fail, but I have to try:

I will NOT spend 2009 beating myself up for the things I did NOT get done in 2008.

  11. "Hold the wagon, I think I just fell off."

    *lol* Great one!

I am happily not going to let anyone get in my way. Including myself.

  12. I will not be procrastinating like I have since graduating from my Master's program this past May.

Other than that, I have to agree with Margaret Yang about not wasting time in 2009.

  13. Happily not do...I second the "Give up" resolution. I will never give up and I will work my tail off to make my goals.

LOL @ letter-writing George Bush. Now if only there were a way to put the pink-en-ed cover at his feet......

  15. Besides give up?
I will not listen to non writers and their non writer ideas about how to write ficton.

I will not worry about the end product and just enjoy the journey.

  16. I will NOT waste time worrying about could-have-beens. And I will also NOT let the sheer audacity of my writing goals for 2009 overwhelm me.

  17. I will not miss my depression meds, and I will not allow myself to feel guilty for moving away from my crazy family.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am going to stop saying yes to things when I really want to say no, a thousand times no.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I will not hold back.

Except where it might get me incarcerated.

Unless, of course, the incarceration would be marketable.

  20. Give up is a good one. I won't be doing that, either.

  21. I will not be griping or whining or complaining. About anything to do with my books.

I will be getting out there and working hard to market in the best way I can, with a belief that I can and will make a difference.

I won't setting goals and putting them away in the bottom drawer.
I'll be hanging them out where I can see where I'm going, where I plan to be by December 31st.

  22. Allow Publishing into my writing space. Wow. I so needed to hear this. I not only let publishing into my writing space, I let it into my head, my creative process, and everywhere else. I also let it destroy my self-confidence.

I was going to say that I would happily not write in 2009 since that's where I've brought myself. Maybe I can change that if I block Publishing out. Thanks!

In my delight over Incarnatio, I somehow MISSED this post. All worthy anti-goals, Lynn. Mine are also to NOT:

    Give up.

    Stay comfortable.

    Waste time.
