Holiday A-choos

I have a cold -- a nasty one that is stealing my voice -- so I'm going to try to get some rest today. So that your visit here wasn't entirely wasted, I've rounded up some old and new holiday links for you:

Mahalo.com's article on How to have a green Christmas offers some excellent and easy-to-do tips on how to green up your holiday and encourage others to do the same.

RecycleWreath: Living with Lindsay has a post from last year on how to make a wreath out of old book pages (or, if you're like me and can't stand to rip up books, maybe try substituting old magazine pages?)

Because you should always know where the man in red is on Christmas Eve, stop by and check out the Official NORAD Santa Tracker (and visit the countdown village to play some games and listen to some holiday tunes.)

Need a Snow Day? aka PBW's favorite online snowflake generator

Every year I revisit pups of Christmas past via Jacquie Lawson's animated card The Snow Dog.

My recipe for PBW's no-brainer fudge is here, and if you're looking for a healthy dessert that is simple to make but still tastes like you slaved all day, I recommend my favorite apple strudel recipe from Cooking Light.

  1. Hi, Lynn.

Hope you're resting up. Getting sick in the winter is, for a better word, hell.

Oh, how cute! My mom mentioned using the santa tracker when visiting my little nephew Robbie last Christmas Eve. He loved it! What a creative idea.

    Feel better.

    Hi
If you don't like making a wreath out of book pages which would go soggy if put outside why not subsistute colourful plastic bags which you would normally throw away.
If stored carefully would last a year or two. Could also string small squares or circle onto thread (like stringing popcorn)to hang accross the room. Added bonus you can get the kids involve and keep them amused and quieter.
I also have some white sticks in a vase - Mine are plastic but white painted twigs would work too - On to these I attach all the bits and bobs(bows & ribbons) that come on your gifts so that they have a prolonged life and you have an ornament that varies each year

All the best to you and yours this holiday season.

  5. Justin, I deleted your comment because you included your e-mail in it, and I've been getting complaints that my visitors who leave their e-mail addresses here are getting SPAMmed by publishers.

That's a great idea. I've been using the reusable cloth bags for a while now but I still have a lot of leftover plastic bags from places like Target (red and white) that would be seasonal-appropriate.

    Hi Lynn
It doesn't have to be just shopping bags. How about the plastic packages you get through the post. I always cut off my address but that still leaves a lot of plastic.
There is a lot of plastic coming into our homes that is wasted and lots of different types. Another item that could be useful for recycling this way is the various types of trays that that come off things like fruit and veg and come in some nice colours.
Some of these are big enough to make a display base for homemade goodies then sealed with cling wrap.
If you made a few bits of plastic with a tassle or dangly a effect and spaced them out along the string would give a nice look to them. If you can't find any silver or gold plastic maybe a small strip of cooking foil spotted here and there would give the colours a lift.
I WOULD WARN ANY PARENTS TRYING THIS TO KEEP PLASTIC BAGS AND LARGER BITS PLASTIC AWAY FROM YOUNG CHILDREN FOR THEIR SAFETY.

  8. I love Snow Dog! I actually visit that often, not just at Christmas. I have to wonder if she did the first interactive online card.

I don't keep my plastic bags at all. We have a huge recycle bin out city gave us and they expect us to use, but they only empty it every other week. It's usually filled after one, but I cram those bags in anywhere I can.

I think I'll have to keep some for next year and try that.

    Feel better soon!

  11. Hope you get to feeling better soon!

And the NORAD thing is absolutely wonderful... until your kids are quick enough to catch on that it's the same exact videos every year!

I had to lie last year and tell them that it was down because too many people were using it and I couldn't get through - they were too suspicious the year before. Wish they'd vary them a bit.

  12. Aw, I hope you feel better soon, Lynn! It's way too easy to get ill in all this yucky, cold weather. :(

Love the idea of the paper wreath! :D Thanks for sharing.
