Candy from a Baby

Won: my annual private wager on who would win the Hugos, fourth year in a row, with a special bonus for the one trophy-clutcher whom I correctly predicted would win it two years ago (everyone, wave to the Loser, who is at this moment writing out another check with a lot of zeroes.)

As always, 100% of the loot is donated to charity, this time Women in Distress of Broward County.

Next wager, if the Loser is still speaking to me: The Quill Awards.

  1. I always feel so filthy, unwashed, and UNREAD when I read those awards lists.

Nice to see Elizabeth Bear honored, however. (Her, I recognized!)

I don't know why. Most industry awards have nothing to do with being clean or books being read.

I'm afraid that the luck doesn't work that way. Sorry, guy. :(

Well, Charles Stross deserves it. If you haven't heard of him, you will...

It may be an industry award, but it's largely fan-led. (http://www.interaction.worldcon.org.uk/hugo.htm), so no points for beign an acceptible face.

I spent Saturday at Worldcon, and had no problems with the sort of people voting.

Ah... the downside of internet: no non-verbal cues. I can't tell whether you're being amusingly sarcastic, or merely laconic!

Slightly jaded, probably. Being able to predict who wins a Hugo two years in advance of the event isn't something I should be able to do, when you think about it.

(And for the doubting Thomases out there, you may check with SF moondogger Gabe Chouinard, and he should verify my long-term prediction, as he was privy to it a year and a half ago.)

I vastly enjoyed reading about the proposed splitting of the Hugo for Best Editor, though. Just when I think SFWA might go rogue, they reassure me that their tiny orbit remains stationary.

Well, I must admit that the politics if it leaves me a little confused, but it's something I don't need to worry about at the moment (and won't, unless I sell anything). I'm just pleased about Charlie.
