First Read of 2013

It's the tenth day of 2013 and I haven't yet read a book this year. Shameful, I know, but I had that trip to the mountains as well as a personal agenda. I like to start off my reading year with a book I really want to read by an author I can depend on to deliver. It sets a tone for the rest of the calendar, plus it's fun deciding which title to pick.

After much pondering of title lists I'm going with Linda Howard's latest hardcover release, Shadow Woman, as my first read of 2013. No matter what she writes Linda is always a terrific storyteller, plus this one has a rather mysterious premise, which fits right in with my new theme for the year:

Lizette Henry wakes up one morning and makes a terrifying discovery: She doesn’t recognize the face she sees in the mirror. She remembers what she looks like, but her reflection is someone else’s. To add to the shock, two years seem to have disappeared from her life. Someone has gone to great and inexplicable lengths to keep those missing years hidden forever. But the past always finds a way to return.

I hate to read alone, so I picked up two extra copies while I was at the bookstore. If you'd like a chance to own one of them, in comments to this post name the title of the first book you've read or would like to read in 2013 (or if you can't remember or think of any, just toss your name in the hat) by midnight EST on Friday, January 11, 2013. I'll choose two names at random from everyone who participates and send the winners an unsigned hardcover copy of Shadow Woman by Linda Howard. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something here at PBW in the past.

The first book I read in 2013 was Shiloh Walker's Stolen, which you kindly sent me along with Nightbred as my contest prize. Nightbred was magnificant but I read that as 2012 was fading. Stolen was amazing. I've read Shiloh before but this book had a deep dark centre I wasn't expecting and once I started I was hooked. Finished it in a day, in between feeding the kids and doing the laundry, but I didn't want to put it down. Good strong heroine and deeply dastardly villain. Excellent story I'd recommend to anyone.

Also confirmed my old school belief that I'm much better off without a Facebook / Twitter account ... !

  3. I am working on Shawntelle Madison's "Coveted" since I was lucky enough to win a copy of the second book in her series from you a few weeks back. I figured I should read the first book first. But school started this week and sadly I haven't had as much time to read as I would like so I just read a few pages here and there when time allows. This doesn't keep me from adding to my TBR pile however. :)

I'm reading Carl Hiaasen's "Star Girl" right now. It will be the first book I read and finished (I started a few that didn't pan out).
This book is a departure for me -- I don't usually read satire, but I'm very entertained.
Next, I'll probably read some Truman Capote. I'm just in the mood.

I just finished "Two of the Deadliest," a collection of short stories edited by Elizabeth George. Now I need to decide between non-fiction (most likely "The Revenge of Geography," by Robert D. Kaplan) and fiction (most likely James Rollins' newest, "Blood Gospel) for my next read.

  8. The first book I read was Unending Devotion by Jody Hedlund. Not an awful book, but I don't recommend going out of your way to read it.

The first book was 'touch of the demon' by Diana Rowland. I'm a born tourist and it really explained a lot about her universe.

    Happy reading!

  22. I would love to read that book, Linda Howard has been a favorite for a long time. I agree, whatever she turns her hand to ends up a fascinating read.
If I remember correctly, I started the new year re-reading Debora Geary's "A Modern Witch" series, interspersing it with some Witch World novels by Andre Norton.
I think my next may be Laura Alden's "Foul Play at the PTA", prepping to read and review book 3, "Plotting at the PTA" She's another author that writes very well. I am particularly fussy about my cozy mysteries, hating the habit some authors have of making the hero/ines Too Stupid To Live simply to forward the plot.
    Alden does a great job.

  25. My first read of the year was Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. I started it right after midnight as we entered 1/1/13; Second was Angelfall by Susan Ee (which is free on amazon kindle right now). I enjoyed them both.

(p.s. don't toss my name in the Linda Howard hat).

  29. I'm almost finished Jeff Abbott's The Last Minute. The first book I read this year was a very dry book about statistics. Shadow Woman is waiting in my TBR pile!

Well, I had wanted to read Shadow Woman, but had to pay some on the hospital bill instead. So I re-read Murder List by Julie Garwood on New Years Day.

  32. My goal this year is to read 12 novels - at least one per month. It's nearly the middle of January and I haven't started yet! Help!

  33. Since January 1, I have read the first four books of Cassandra Clare's "Immortal Instruments" series, and right now am about 2/3 thru the fifth book. I'm a little cross-eyed, haven't had much sleep, and am a LOT obsessed with this new-to-me fictional world I've been sucked into ...

  34. That one looks great! It'll go on my TBR list any which way. Wouldn't be the first of the year, though.
    [Pause to count.]
I've been devouring Sandra Brown's Low Pressure today, and it's at least book #6 since New Year's. Depends on if I've left any books in my room I've forgotten to count - there are three sitting here on my desk, plus two that one of my teens brought home from the library. Oh, and a couple mid-length ebooks.

  35. The first one that I read for this year was "The Second Vendetta" by Carl Brush. Interesting piece of historical fiction that I highly recommend to anyone who is interested about California around the turn of the 20th century.

Just finished Jayne Ann Krentz's Dream Eyes and enjoyed it. It was a bit of a race to which would be the first book - I keep one that travels around with me and one near my desk. That one is Gini Koch's Touched by an Alien and I am enjoying it but finished Dream Eyes first.

  37. So far this year, I've been reading Felix J. Palma's "The Map of Time." It's Dickensian in length and style, and while it reads slowly, I'm really enjoying it.

Let's see, so far this year I have read at least 15 books. And parts of others. However, the absolute first book I read this year was ...Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer. I found my library had most of hers on loan, and I have been reading them for the first time since high school. I had never read that one, but it was pretty good!

  39. The first book I finished this year was Alison Weir's A Dangerous Inheritance, but I started it in December, so I don't know if that counts. The first complete book I'll read this year is Freeman Walker by David Alan Cates.

  40. The first book I finished this year was Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. Funny, horrifying, more funny and touching love story. Great memoir, though the blood and gore was a bit horrifying.
