Nine Lives

Guess whose latest release is debuting at #9 on the New York Times bestseller list this week?

Yep, that's Cat Trick, the latest Magical Cats mystery by Sofie Kelly, aka our pal Darlene Ryan. I've loved this series since the first book hit the shelves so you know I'm a very happy girl. There is also nothing more awesome than seeing a friend who is such a gifted storyteller skyrocket to the top of the lists.

I know how I'm going to celebrate: by giving away some copies of Ms. Kelly's brand new bestseller, of course. If you'd like one of them to be yours, in comments to this post tell us what you'd name a magical cat by midnight EST on Friday, February 22nd, 2013. I'll draw nine names at random from everyone who participates and send the winners an unsigned copy of Cat Trick by Sofie Kelly. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something here at PBW in the past.

  1. Lynn,
Hmm, neat challenge. All of my cats have "chosen" their own names. For example, my old girl (16 years young this year) is calico colored. The first time I saw her, I called out to her to "come here you little calico kitten." She ignored me, as only a cat can. The second time I called her, I said "come on little callie kitten." She turned around and came to me then! So, Callie is her name.

Every one of the cats I have gotten have "chose" their names or let me "know" what it was. Usually, within the first few days of ownership. Only one cat that I have now has not and that is my Romeo. My hubby actually named him for the helicopter he was working on 'cuz Romeo as a kitten was living in the hangar where my hubby was working. (My hubby was working on an SH-60R or H-60 romeo class helicopter when he found Romeo.) However, Romeo has lived up to his name by being a complete lover. . . . .almost annoyingly so!

So, now onto the contest part. I don't think you can name a cat, but if I had to I would choose something Egyptian because the Egyptians worshiped them. Bast is always a good name (she was the cat goddess), Isis or Hathor or if it was a boy maybe Horus or Anubis. Just my thoughts!

    Missy Gazoola.

I know its silly but you know that song in the Cinderella movie that the fairy godmother sings as she changes the pumpkin & stuff? It goes "bipity boppity bipity boppity boo"? I always think the first words at the start of the song are "missy gazoola". So if I had a cat, it would of course be magical, and I'd call her Missy Gazoola.

Unfortunately for me, Amazon's estimated delivery of Cat Tricks is 9th April so you lucky people will have to enjoy it on my behalf and let me know what you think.

I'd name the Magical Cat, Miss Minney! Because every cat that my Mom had was named Minney and it seems ironic that Minney Mouse might not be friends with my Miss Minney.

I'd name a magical cat after a person or character-maybe a magician or maybe just a person/character I wish got a second chance. My current fur baby is Hoban Washburn II (browncoats unite!) and we call him Wash for short. I might call a magical cat Dresden after a favorite wizard for hire.

Rowan, a mash-up and slight spelling tweak of Rod and Owen from Shanna Swendson's Enchanted Inc. series.

They're two best friends who are wizards, and I could get into the character traits and the dynamics between them but we'd be here all day...we'll just leave it at I love these two and I'd totally name a magical cat after them.

I LOVE Shanna Swendson's Enchanted Inc. series, but have never come across someone who knows about it! I love the name Rowan too!

This could be a difficult challenge. I suspect any magical cat would be picky about what us lowly humans call him or her. If it were a boy I would try Talos, Orion, or maybe Talib or Keenan and see which the little guy responded best to. I like the names on this list because their meanings are all associated with myths, legends, and magic. If it were a girl I would try Jini, Jada, Melina or Sophia because of their meanings. My experience with cats and names has been similar to Tami's; the cats know what they like and refuse to respond to what they don't!

  12. I have a magic cat in a story I'm writing. His name is Bonzo (because I like old Ronald Regan movies...) but I think -- Thinister because he would have a lisp

  15. Our three cats are named: Scully, Muldar and Agent in Charge Skinner :) So funny to read this post, for some reason when I got out of bed this morning I decided that our next cat would be named Darcy (yes, after that Darcy - my most favorite book).

  16. Being an Egyptologist I would have said Bastet - but having read the comments above that doesn't appear very original.
Therefore, my magical cat name would probably be Pyrite - fool's gold: with a trick of the eye the cat makes you believe she is magic!
Her twin - the non magical cat - would be called 'Tah-Dah'.
    Love your giveaways. Inspired.

  21. Congratulations to Darlene!

My most magical cat was Mystic, a little black queen from the California Gold Country. I still miss her, twenty years later!

  22. So I already have a magical cat, Merlin! He's a sweet albeit angry looking Ragdoll cat (and a champion to boot!). We didn't name him, however, so his magicalness has been slightly reduced by our less than magical and less than champion-like nickname, Merle. I was insistent that we don't call him that as it sounds so lowbrow in comparison to the wizardliness that was Merlin. We also own his son, named Nero, and while we toyed with renaming Merlin to Claudius, alas, Merle ended up sticking.

  24. Belgarion for a male cat, for sure. He would grow up somewhat whiny and then mature into an awesome ruler/sorceror cat. ;-)

  26. Hi Sofie, in Sweden everyone knows Pelle Svanslös (Peter No-tail)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter-No-Tail_(film)The author wrote 12 books about him and all of them are classic and still read to (and by) children. They are very intelligent books and it is great fun to read them also for grownups. Kind regards from a follower in Sweden. katinka.billelindahl@gmail.com

I am just getting ready to start this series. It looks great! :)

I have a habit of naming my cats after junkfood - Oreo and Frito were my most recent. But I think I'd name my magical cat Sparks.
