Reasons to Hide Under the Bed

The one and only time I willingly go to the e-reader kiosk at the bookstore to find out which model is best for gimps like me, there is no demo guy there, all the store clerks are too busy to help me and I mess up the demo model the minute I touch it.

I fill out my entire month's schedule on every calendar in the house with all the right names, appt. times and work schedules. As I'm patting myself on the back for being so uber-organized, I realize I neglected to first flip all the calendars from February to March.

I don't insist on doing the laundry for my kid because he wants to be more independent, and demonstrates this by washing and drying a load of his own clothes. Only he forgets to check the pockets like I do, which is why he also washes and dries an extra-large indelible black marker that he forgot he stuck in his work trousers.

I am so intent on finishing a piece with intricate, pain-in-the-ass hand-quilting that I refuse to move it or me from the sewing table until it's done. An hour later I finally knot the final thread, go to lift the piece and discover I have quilted it beautifully -- to the cover I forgot to take off the sewing table.

Have you got any reasons to hide under your bed this weekend? Let us know in comments.

  1. I think the last reason you gave made me laugh the hardest. You poor thing! Other than the fact that it's been Autumn in Australia for 3 days and it's already raining like Niagara Falls, I don't think there are any big reasons for me to hide away just yet.

  2. Oh man, Lynn, that's rough stuff. I don't know what's worse going through the wash - indelible markers or crayons. I haven't done anything lately to make me want to hide, but that's only because I haven't really done anything lately.

  3. Black permanent marker eventually fades. And he'll hopefully learn from the mistake, too.

I've done the calendar thing countless times. My hubby just barely planned a whole trip to Savannah, with kids in tow, only to discover he had the wrong month, and the kids would not be on spring break at that time. Oops. My biggest problem is not getting items on the calendar.

The quilting thing hurts my heart, though. I've sewn beautiful seams complete with lace and other elements only to realize one panel was inside out... that's tough stuff.

Right now the only thing that would make me go under the bed, though, is a tornado. Today, however, that might be a possibility.

  4. My heart goes out to you! And I just use a kindle for my ebooks. So easy to touch the right and left page turning buttons. My hands sometimes shake too bad for my husband's nook or most tablets.

My week was filled with go back to bed moments, so I'm hoping this weekend is a relatively productive one. *hugs*

  5. I've had a fairly bad week as well:

I nearly choked to death on, of all things, a soap bubble from my face wash; went to the dentist for a simple visit, ended up two hours later after oral surgery with a gaping hole where my tooth used to be; putting away the groceries, a large jar of tomato sauce slipped out of my hand, dropped perfectly to the floor, exploding like Old Faithful all over the walls, my clothes, even the ceiling. Sigh.

Sewing, quilting, such humbling skills. Or do I want to say, been there done that?

  6. Well, I've managed to quilt a square to my pants.

    Don't ask...

Under the bed this week? No. BACK to bed or rather, not even getting up? This morning. After the 50mph winds last night and today, the blinding snow and having no power since 2 this morning, under the covers with the dogs was the place to be for me until I braved the cold house to build a fire.

Still don't have power, but my cellphone makes a great internet connection and I couldn't stand it anymore.

OH! And though my DH always assures me he's gone through his pockets, the one time I didn't check was when he forgot to take a paint pen out of his pants pocket. Took him hours to get the paint out of my washer.

    Lynn,
Here's how things have been for me this week:

Thursday: Diagnosed with a sinus infection (now on a z-pack)

Friday afternoon: Go out to check my horse and find that his right eye is swollen shut. Put in call to my horse vet and he is about to leave town, tells me not to worry and leaves meds for the eye on his porch for me (he will be in Sarasota until Monday at a roping competition).

Friday night: After arguing with the horse about doctoring his eye, I come into the house and start getting ready for bed. My husband beats me to sleep, so I walk through the house shutting off lights and notice 2 of my cats playing with something. I get closer to find out that it is a baby diamondback rattlesnake IN MY HOUSE!!! (After screaming at the cats and running, I woke up my husband.)

Saturday morning: Husband wakes me up bright and early to eat breakfast. Of course he forgets with the sinus infection, I can't taste anything. Then I argue with my horse some more (eye is no better, but no worse so far).

Saturday afternoon: I attempt to take a nap. Failed!

Saturday evening: Took real Sudafed for the first time in years. Now, I can't sleep.

Please, please, pray that Sunday will be better!

We'll take some of that rain on this side of the planet if you want to send it over, Bonnee. It's so dry in my town we're under round-the-clock wildfire watch.

It's not quite as bad as a plastic Halloween bag filled with candy and bubble gum that a four-year-old wants to hide from her brother and decides in the load of wet clothes in the dryer is a fine place. The clothes were completely totaled, and it took me about a week to scrub and scrape out all the mess from the inside walls of the dryer.

Ah, so you understand my pain. I put little dot stickers on the right sides of fabric and patchwork before I start sewing. This was a lesson I learned after I pieced a king-size Irish Chain and didn't realize I'd set in two units wrong side up until I finished attaching the borders. The mistakes were in the center so of course it took me forever to rip out all the seams.

We're keeping all you folks in the storm zone in our prayers tonight. Be safe.

I'd make a joke about release week but this situation really isn't funny. You be safe, too, lady.

Thanks for the rec, Dawn. I haven't seriously looked at the Kindle yet because I had hopes for the Nook with the touch screen, but it looks like my fingers are too clumsy for it.

    Sending good thoughts your way.

Oh, honey, you need to take the rest of the month off.

. . .putting away the groceries, a large jar of tomato sauce slipped out of my hand, dropped perfectly to the floor, exploding like Old Faithful all over the walls, my clothes, even the ceiling. Sigh.

I did a smaller version of that with a glass bottle of olive oil. In the end we had to repaint the kitchen.

It's supposed to be relaxing, or so the myth goes. ;)

Good Lord. I hope you all have power by now. I don't know how you Northerners do it; I'd be on a plane for the islands by now.

    Ouch. Paint is not fun.

God Almighty. In the house? I would have moved out, right on the spot.

I hope you and your horse are feeling better soon -- stay on those meds!

  17. Poor thing!

Luckily, I haven't had much on the side of bad luck this weekend, unless you count the fact that my broom would not stand up on its own while my Facebook feed was flooded with brooms standing on their own. Otherwise, I've been productive. But, trust me, I understand your pain! I have had plenty of weekends like yours! :)

  19. I have made sewing mistakes more times than I can count, it's worse when I am tired. Like sewing myself to myself, etc. I feel your pain! I had bad sales weekend at the ren fair, nobody was buying anything. But it was also Pride Day on Sunday and the people watching was faaaaabulous! Like, epically awesome. I've had a baby diamondback on my porch, but only a king snake IN the house. Ugh...sometimes I really don't like living in the desert!
