RW: Name This Ship

First, the big announcement:

I've accepted an offer from Ace/Roc to publish Drednoc (StarDoc book #8) and Crystal Healer (StarDoc book #9.) No firm pub dates yet, but I expect Drednoc will hit the shelves sometime in 2008 and Crystal Healer in 2009. Thanks to Shiloh Walker for nagging motivating me, Cathy G. for your thoughtful e-mails, and all my SF readers for keeping the faith and continuing to support the StarDoc series.

I have a HouseClan Torin scout ship in Drednoc that Cherijo and Reever are going to be flying around, but it doesn't have a name yet. I thought you guys might enjoy a contest to christen it (btw, Enterprise and Millennium Falcon? Are taken.)

To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, all of my previous Jorenian ship names combine two words that are related to nature, sky, flight, or the journey, i.e.:

Cloudwalk
Sunlace
Windmaze

In comments to this post, tell me what you'd name the Torin scout ship by midnight EST on Tuesday, April 24, 2007. I will select the name that I like best out of all the entries, announce my choice on Reader Wednesday (April 25) next week, and use the name in my novel Drednoc.

The commenter who has the winning name will receive a personal thank-you from me in the acknowledgments for Drednoc, my original artwork for the ship you've named (created and signed by me), a complete signed set of all seven StarDoc novels in print, and the very first copy of the final print edition of Drednoc that I get when it's published next year (also signed.)

The fine print: the name you post must be original, as in your own creation, and not copied from any other source or named ship. To keep things fair, please only post one name. This contest is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something here at PBW in the past.

    Skyriver

(maybe I'll add this to one of your Q&A days: do Jorenians dance? I thought of Skydance, for the joy that "dance" implies in movement; However, when I think of Jorenians the idea of "joy in movement" leans more toward warrior fighting training, which can be dance-like. Between that and the graceful gestures in speech, would there be a need for dance to have evolved? I'll stop now.)

Congratulations on the contract! Can't wait to see more of Cherijo and Reever. Well, mostly Cherijo.

Anyway, my name idea is the Snowblink. I like it because it fits the requirements, has a smaller feel than its mammoth counterparts, and reminds me immensely of Reever's "cold eyes." Hope you like it.

Loving the names submitted and getting a big kick out of all the people who are so excited to participate that they didn't actually pause to read the rules. Kinda like I'd react to a contest offering a lifetime supply of Doritoes, I imagine. :)

Oh, man.... this just totally made my day. Two more Stardocs. That's like an early birthday present.

*G* Gee... do I nag? I never nag. Unless of course it actually might accomplish something. Now comes the crappy part. Waiting for them.

As much as I would love to give a brilliant name, I just finished a book and my brain is mush for a few more days.

Only thing I can come up with that fits the general 'Jorenian' feel is Rainsphere.

I gotta admit, though... Skywalker would have been fantastic. Too bad Lucas has already taken it.

    Therefore, how about this:

    Congratulations on the books.

  72. This is awesome. I just read StarDoc a few days ago for the first time. Then read Beyond Varallan and Endurance in about eighteen hours. It would've been faster, but school got in the way. I am pining because my local used bookstore does not have Shockball. I might actually have to (shudder) go to Borders. Because I must have it. Now. What do you mean there are 60 books waiting to be read on my shelf...?

As for the names...geez. I'm really tempted to just post all the ones I can think of. But I was a good girl and read the rules, so I won't. (I will change my mind about eight thousand times, though.) Okay, the one I like the best is...

I'm like the stinkin' NINTIETH comment. That's amazing... but then with a prize as tantallizing as this one, PBW, it should come as no surprise. And there's practically a week left to go... You're going to have your work cut out for you picking one! (Even just sorting through the entries to make a list.) It's like playing Apples to Apples... just make piles of "Yes" "No" "Maybe" as you go through 'em or you'll lose your mind. :-D

Awesome on the two new books! I'm so excited. =D Also, it'll be cool to have one of your reader's pick the ship name. There are so many good ones. Here's my toss within the hat: AzurianFlame. Azure is a word for a deep blue sky, as well as the color of deep blue (kind calmlike). And flame because underneath, when you mess with their family, they become like a flame, with anger and honor to try to cleanse things and make them whole (though...fire doesn't really make things whole, but it allows things to rebuild).

Hm, and I just searched through my StarDoc book and found that the color of Jorenians are sapphire, not deep blue as I usually imagine when I read. Well, now I know. =)

I've become hopelessly addicted to your blog. It's one of the first things I do in the morning, but only because I haven't found anything yet that trumps coffee.

And thank you, by the way, for having responded to my Friday questions. I appreciate the fact that you take the time, let alone coming up with all these great contests.

Speaking of which, I'd like to enter Stoneswift.

    Thanks again!

  125. The name of the ship is:

    The Astrotóraí.

It would be a Gaelic-Greek combination that translates to "one who pursues stars." (being a scout ship and all)

Not sure if you researched the name Torin or not, but I thought it would be fitting for the ship to match the name. If you prefer to use more of a contemporary name, then please accept the translated:

    Starseeker.

I hope that doesn't count as two entries, but if it does, please accept the first.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Anonymous7:11 PM

    Congratuations! That's fantastic news.

My entry (after much debating) is:
    Snowdrift
The "snow" to symbolize Cherijo's past (specifically the time she spent on Akkabarr) and the "drift" to symbolize their drifting path through space.

Thanks so much for having this contest!

    Yay! More StarDoc!
After many hours of serious contemplation, I had hit upon a really good entry. That was this morning, and I can not remember what is was. Or maybe I just dreamed it. In any case, I think "Shadowdart" sounds like a Jorenian scout ship.
