Talk Like a . . .

Answer an easy 25-question quiz about how you pronounce words, and the New York Times will show where you most fit in dialect-wise on a U.S. map.

I took the test, and here are my results:

How accurate is the test? Well, in my case, 99.9%. As a young kid I lived about three blocks south of Pembroke Pines, and later spent much of my teen years in Fort Lauderdale. I'll guess the Jacksonville crept into my speech patterns when I was a young adult and commuted there for work for several years.

  1. In my case, no accurate at all. Apparently I sound like I come from the areas around Denver!

Well how interesting was that? It doesn't help that I'm a Brit, but I ended up with Birmingham (Alabama I think?), a place called Yonkers (love it!) and the big apple itself, New York. Of course there are always a couple of ambiguous questions, like the long sandwich. To me a "sandwich" implies filling between 2 slices of bread, but filling in a soft bun would be a roll, or in crusty bread would be a baguette. Regional linguistic differences are so fascinating aren't they?

I sent this to a couple of friends to see what they got and my Scottish friend got Spokane!

The test was dead-on for me. I grew up in Nebraska, lived in Lincoln and Omaha and other close cities. Now I live in SW Iowa. My map showed Omaha, Lincoln and DesMoines. Fun!
