They Finally Got Me

It's mine, thanks to my lovely family, who decided to drag me into the twenty-first century and the E-Future by giving it to me for my birthday. So now I have to learn how to use one.

Here's a peek at the first book I bought (which is ridiculously easy, and now I get why people are buying so many e-books):

Works of e.e. cummings, which is not a complete works (which I would have preferred) but includes The Enormous Room, the one novel he wrote that I've never read. I also wanted Edward to be the first author on my e-reader; he's always brought me luck.

My other purchases: Marjorie Liu's Hunter Kiss novels, because that's the one series I want to take with me wherever I go, and I assume this thing will be traveling with me. I also invested in Carolyn Jewel's Free Fall as my first indie author buy.

So now I'm curious -- if you have an e-reader, what was the first book you bought for it, and why?

  1. First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher because it was the last in the Codex Alera series and had just come out the day before, but I hadn't had time to get to the store yet and buy it and was dying to find out how the series ended. No regrets on making that my purchase! Spectacular end to a great series!

I quickly followed up that purchase by grabbing as many free books as I could find that caught my attention so I'd never be short of choices and wouldn't fall into the trap of browsing and buying without knowing how much I was spending. I wanted to limit the impulse buys as much as possible. In my opinion, it is a little too easy to buy books. . .

  2. Enjoy the Nook... that's what I have too. Originally I didn't think I'd use it as much as I do but now... yeah, it is pretty much always with me.

As for first book on the Nook, I believe mine was Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews and books by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman though I can't remember now which ones came first.

  3. Ha! Um...dunno. Read them for too long. Don't remember!

    Happy birthday!

  4. Excellent! I'll be looking out to hear what you think of your lovely Nook. My first book on Kindle? Gosh, that was almost 2 years ago...I think it might have been mine :-(

  5. I actually just got my 4th Kindle. I went with the Kindle Touch this time. The first book I am reading on it is Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold. This is the eARC from Baen since the book won't be published until November. The first thing I did was transfer all my Bujold and Liaden Universe books (Sharon Lee and Steve Miller) to my new Touch. They are the ones I always want to have with me. Second I transferred all my review books from NetGalley. I'm not sure what I'll be putting on there next. I have a few hundred archived at Amazon.

I hope you love your ereader as much as I love mine.

  6. Happy Birthday YOU! Did they get you the Nook Color or Tablet? I love my Nook Tablet. I rooted it so now, I really do have a nice little all around tablet I can do almost anything with. Except maybe make bread...

The first eBook I actually bought specifically from the tablet was Frostfire. I had several research books in e format I'd already purchased and I loaded those, but yeah, Frostfire was my first official for the tablet purchase :o)

  7. Heee! My dad got me a little bit ago.

The first book I put on there was Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey. My favorite fantasy comfort read. Then I bought Layer Cake, Jelly Roll, and Charm Quilts by Pam Lintott (I recommend the book, but reading it on e-reader was a challenge--still, it was good for me to try and visualize better). I got my Kindle because we were going on a long family vacation and I wasn't supposed to pack much. My family knows that if I get only one suitcase for a week, it'd mostly be full of books and I'd be wearing the same two shirts the whole week, lol.

  8. Welcome to the dark side! LOL. I still have my kindle first gen (Okay, technically, I don't still have it, as my 18 y.o. son has 'borrowed' it, semi-permanently) that I bought used, years ago when the 2nd gen ones came out.

I can't remember the first book I bought for it.

I do love the fact that I can have some of my old, tried and true favorites with me at all times, including Diane Duane's Young Wizard's series, and everything by Lois McMaster Bujold. :)

  9. The first book I loaded on my Nook was The Between by LJCohen. Lisa is a friend and it was a beta read. She has since self-published it. The second, and the first I read, is her House of Many Doors, which hasn't been pubbed. Yet. :D

  10. Hurray, and Happy Birthday...!!

I never thought I would have an e-reader for any reason. Then I got one for my birthday last July, and I fell in love. I still buy books, but I also have a very large and wonderful collection that I now take with me everywhere I go on my skinny little Kindle.

The first three books I bought weres J R Rain's Vampire for Hire series which I had wanted to read for ages but they were only available in ebook format.

  11. Congrats! The first ebook I ever bought was in February 2003 and it was an erotic romance from Jaid Black titled "The Empress New Clothes". I still love the series that book started. It probably sounds weird, but that's how I discovered romance as well. Better late than never, I guess.

  12. I have a Sony eReader and have had it forever. I think the first book I bought was one of Zette's (Lazette Gifford) but I've had it too long to be sure. I've had mine long enough to have started before there were so many possibilities :).

  13. Happy B-day!

The first book on my e-reader was Entangled, an anthology that benefits breast cancer research. I love having books so handy when I have to wait somewhere.

I first purchased e-books for my laptop, then got the Sony E-reader. I recently sold this to get myself an android tablet mainly because my reader had a very small screen and I really needed something bigger. I've downloaded several reader apps including FBReader & Kindle so I can read in any format.

My first e-reader purchase was the Breed series by Lora Leigh which I got from Ellora's Cave. I found it a bit tricky at first because the web site seemed to be aimed at the US market and I'm in the UK. Its just annoying when the box asks for your "state" and it doesn't have Buckinghamshire as an option!!

  15. I've had my Kindle for a few years now, and have over 300 titles on it. I bet my very first one was my own book "Your Words, Your Story." I didn't read it. I just wanted it there.

  16. eReading is wonderful, no? To tote a hundred books with no additional weight or bulk?

I purchased three right off the bat:
    1) Self-Editing for Fiction Writers (Dave King & Renni Browne), and
    2) Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card), and
    3) Daughter of Hauk (KateMarie Collins)

  18. Pride and Prejudice by accident actually.

My first real purchase was Cat Daddy by Jackson Galaxy because we are new to having cats and it the preview caught my interest.

  19. I actually bought Frostfire by Lynn Viehl :) I got my Kindle as a Christmas present. Now that I have a job that requires a lot of travel, I use it constantly.

  20. I have an off-brand ereader that my husband bought me. I collected so many ebooks over the years, but I didn't want to add to the butt in chair computer time.

But as for the first book I bought for it... I think it was Lancelot's Lady by Cherish D'Angelo. I bought it on sale as part of a 'launch party'.

  21. Congratulations!
I was recently given the same shove, lol. And though it won't replace my love of print books, I have grown to like the e-reader very much.
    First books?
Grimm's Fairy Tales & Jane Eyre.
And then my first pubbed ebook, just because I'd never seen it as others had.
    Happy B-Day, lady!! :)

  22. I find the free books all the time. First one I bought was "Basilisk" by Rob Thurman.

  23. Hooray for you!!! Fingers crossed that you are going to love your Nook!!!

I love print books but I love my ereader, too. Make that ereaders. I have both a Kindle and a Sony EReader and I like both of them. I use my Kindle about 90% of the time, though.

When Nook debuted, I was given one as a gift too -- but it was the first version, right off the boat, and after returning 3 Nook Colors because the highlights started going nuts on me (software glitch in that version), I got a cash refund and went off to buy my Kindle Keyboard with 3G WiFi. Which made me sad: the Nook was so, so pretty.

Here's my contribution to the chat:

    1. As for using it to read, in answer to your question, my first books were the free classics - Jane Eyre, Alice in Wonderland, etc. I was so amazed I could push a button and get these great works for free. And so fast. (Great for insomniacs like me!) Then I started discovering new authors in the Top 100 Free Ebooks list. I'm still doing both these things.

    2. However, I also use my Kindle for researching. For me, the e-reader is a writing tool, too.

Here's what I mean: I highlight and take small notes of ebooks as I'm reading (note-wise, this usually means a short phrase - nothing lengthy). Then, I backup the notes and highlights onto my computer (in a Dropbox file) - later this goes into Word research files (sometimes Scrivener but I'm still getting the hang of Scrivener, I'm really still a Word-gal).

Cool thing is that the highlight will keep the location in the Kindle ebook so if I want to check that reference to read more, to double check something, whatever, I can easily flip screens into the ebook and read from the page itself (using my Kindle for PC app). Very fast. Very.

Since I write or edit a lot of nonfiction, this is very important for me b/c I need to create proper endnotes or footnotes, etc. However, I am tenderly working on my romance novel too, and this strategy helps me in the fiction writing world, in much the same way - pulling stuff; keeping track for where I found this or that.

Again, this is Kindle not Nook but thought I'd share -- and congrats again, PBW!!!!

  24. Happy birthday! I just got my first e-reader about 2 weeks ago. It's the Nook tablet and the first book I bought for it was Jeaniene Frost's book Once Burned.
    Enjoy!

  25. I acquired a decrepit Kindle a few years ago, (the 'previous page' button is broken and it tends to reboot at it's own whim) but the ease of holding the ereader is amazing, even when compared to smaller paperback books. I have arthritic hands, and although I knit and crochet with abandon holding my hands in the same cramped position when holding a book open, especially when I am in bed can become excruciating before the end of a chapter.
My husband just ordered me a tablet/ereader (great deal at $70) and I am looking forward to making it my constant companion. I especially look forward to loading pattern pdfs and cookbooks, as well as expanding my ability to review ebook versions of books for Fresh Fiction.

  26. I own an older sony ereader that is now a doorstop, but the first book I downloaded was Karen Marie Moning's Darkfever (back when suvudu had awesome monthly picks). I use the kindle to pc function until I finally cave and buy a kindle (which will probably happen soon since my wrists are killing me when I read a book) and the first book I downloaded then was Lori G. Armstrong's Blood Ties. :)

  27. I think you live in the same area as I do. Lake County Libraries have e-books avialable for check out. You don't even need to visit the library, unless you don't have a library card.
