Color Pick Your Career

AOL Jobs has an interesting article here on how to determine your career path based on your favorite colors (with a free test you can take on CareerPath.com here).

It's a little late for me to make a drastic career move, but I thought I'd try the test and see if I've taken the right path. Here are my results:

Best Occupational Category
You're a RESEARCHER
Keywords: Independent, Self-Motivated, Reserved, Introspective, Analytical, and Curious

These investigative types gather information, analyze and interpret data, and inquire to uncover new facts. They have a strong scientific orientation, enjoy academic or research environments and prefer self-reliant jobs. Dislikes are group projects, selling, and repetitive activities.

RESEARCHER OCCUPATIONS

Suggested careers are College Professor, Physician, Psychologist, Pharmacist, Chemist, Marketing Research, Inventor, Sales Forecasting, Project Engineer, Dentist, Identifying Consumer Demand, Chiropractor, Dentist, Medical Technician, Optometrist, Research & Development Manager, Respiratory Therapist, Real Estate Appraiser, Chiropractor, Veterinarian, Geologist, Physicist, Science Teacher, Medical Technologist, and Author of Technical Books.

RESEARCHER WORKPLACES
Task-oriented careers where you can become absorbed in the job, be original and creative, and not conform to rigid company rules will work best for you. Unstructured organizations, for example, that allow you to sail your own ship are vital.

Suggested Researcher workplaces are universities and colleges, home office positions, medical facilities, computer-related industries, scientific foundations and think tanks, research firms, and design laboratories.

2nd Best Occupational Category
You're a CREATOR

Keywords: Nonconforming, Impulsive, Expressive, Romantic, Intuitive, Sensitive, and Emotional

These original types place a high value on self-expression. They enjoy working independently, being creative, using their imagination, and constantly learning something new. Areas of interest are far beyond the expected fields of art, drama, music, and writing. There are many occupations that allow creators to express, assemble, or implement ideas and maximize resources.

So it seems I've made the right choice after all.

If you're not inclined to color your own career, this might be a fun test to try for your characters, to consider personality quirks and possibly occupations on the color palettes you've put together for them.

  1. This was so interesting ... I'm currently struggling with a crisis of faith & career choice, and while I don't think I should let some on-line quickie test determine my future, it *did* assure me that I am what I am. And hopefully a new employer will appreciate me more than the present one!

BTW, I came out first choice as CREATOR, which is dead on!

  2. Thanks. That was fascinating. The article simplified it so much my results were way off, but when I did the full one, I could definitely see how they'd nailed my interest areas. The good thing is that the results matched what I love to do too :).

  3. I'm apparently a Creator first, and a Persuader second. Dang; should have taken this before I wasted all of those years studying biology! If only had someone had told me that because my favorite color is green, I'd just end up writing novels and blog posts for a living anyway. :p

  4. That was pretty cool! I got creator and doer...kind of accurate, as that's what I do (as both a teacher and a writer). :)

  5. I'm a Creator/Organizer. Usually these things are fun but not accurate, but that's me down to the ground. Go figure. Though me on paper does sound a little weird: impulsive/self-control, emotional/self-contained...

Maybe I'll simply go mad in the end. :)

  6. I got the same thing as you, and I am a graduate student right now performing biomedical research. I guess I chose right!

    Wow, that's good. I got:

    Best Occupational Category
    You're an ORGANIZER
    Keywords

Self-Control, Practical, Self-Contained, Orderly, Systematic, Precise, and Accurate

These conservative appearing, plotting-types enjoy organizing, data systems, accounting, detail, and accuracy. They often enjoy mathematics and data management activities such as accounting and investment management. Persistence and patience allows them to do detailed paperwork, operate office machines, write business reports, and make charts and graphs.

    ORGANIZER CAREERS
Suggested careers are Administrator, Secretary, Printer, Paralegal, Building Inspector, Bank Cashier, Private Secretary, Statistician, Operations Manager, Financial Analyst, Bookkeeper, Medical Records Technician, Developer of Business or Computer Systems, Clerical Worker, Proofreader, Accountant, Administrative Assistant, Banker, Certified Public Accountant, Credit Manager, Store Salesperson, Actuary, Dental Assistant, Business Education Teacher, Food Service Manager, IRS Agent, Budget Analyst, and Underwriter.

And as a second choice, Researcher.

Not bad as I've spent my entire career in secretarial / administration roles, currently Adminisration Manager. I guess I'm in the right profession after all.

  8. Heh, that's the first test that turned out to be accurate. Creator first, Organizer second - yes, I'm one of those weird creative types who needs an immaculate workplace. Clutter gets on my nerves.

  10. Creator first, Social Manager second. Interesting. I think they're probably more right than I would have thought but after reading the descriptions and pondering, yup, that's me! :D And I am so outside those two things in what I do at work, no wonder I'm not happy...

  11. Was a little skeptical but it was extremely accurate. Not in what I do for a job, but in what I love to do. Got Creator/Persuader and was surprised to find educator under the creator listing.

I have been homeschooling my children for the last 16 years and teaching co-op classes for other homeschoolers for at least 10 of those years. Don't think I could ever teach in public schools too many rules about what you can and can't say/do.

As for Persuader, I have been in a leadership position in at least one homeschool organization for 14 of the 16 years that we homeschooled and even though we graduated our youngest child this last year I am going to continue in leadership positions in two different organizations and continue to teach co-op classes for homeschoolers.

I got Creator/Organizer. I'd been brainwashed into believing those were mutually exclusive concepts, but having finished my first detailed whole-book outline this weekend, I have to say it feels really, really good to know what everything is, where it goes, and that it's all there. I still have all the same enthusiasm for getting down to writing the story, but none of the anxiety about running into the Dead Space of the Unknown, so my inner artiste gets along just fine with my inner list-making, collating, labels-out neat freak, after all.

  13. WOW! I am way behind on keeping up with my computer reading and just read this post. I took the test. All I can say is WOW! Had me spot on target! Yes, I was in the military and now work for a fire department. "Organizations structured with clearly drawn lines of authority, for example the armed forces, enforcement agencies, and security protection occupations will work best for you." Yep, that's me. Plus I am a "doer". OMG! Love this test and will be having my husband take it next.
