Body Double & BAM Haul

I was reading an article about how we see our own body size that included a link to My Body Gallery, a site that shows photos of real women's bodies (not nude or lascivious in any way, just real-life gals.) The cool thing about it is that you can search the photos by height, weight, pant size, shirt size and body type (pear, banana, apple or hourglass) in order to find photos of women with a matching body type. This could be helpful when you're writing a female character whose physical stats don't match your own or anyone you know. With this site you can get a good look at real women who are a body double of your character, which will help you write more accurate, realistic descriptions.

Now if they only had one for real men . . . .

Yesterday I cured a minor case of the blues by making a run to BAM and finding a half-dozen books I wanted: two books as gifts for friends (which I'm not naming or showing you because both read the blog and they're just going to have to wait until the party), and four new releases for me: Mary Balogh's The Proposal, Gail Carriger's Timeless, Sofie Kelly's Copycat Killing and Shiloh Walker's Hunter's Rise. Should keep me curled up and happy through the weekend, which proves there is no better way to shop for prezzies and shake off doldrums at the same time than a visit to the bookstore.

Have you guys picked up any new releases you've been impatiently waiting on? Share some titles in comments.

After reading comments to your blog, I've just got Sofie Kelly's Curiosity Killed the Cat and I'm looking forward to reading it. Shiloh Walker's Hunter series is a special favourite of mine and I must get my hands on that book. I haven't read the other 2 authors yet but will add them to my "look for" list.

I hate to say it but I'm still waiting for Nightborn. I'm really annoyed about the delays from Amazon and have just purchased it from someone else. Everyone else I know has already read & enjoyed it - and keep telling how much they enjoyed it, the wee beasties.

Another book I'm looking forward to is Lethal Rider, the next in Larissa Ione's Lords of Deliverance. I really enjoyed her "sex demons" and these books are brilliant.

Katie Macalister's Spark's Fly, the next in the Light Dragons is also a "can't wait".

I just finished Kevin Hearne's fourth Iron Druid installment, Tricked. They're the kind of books I might as well read aloud because I spend so much time answering "What are you laughing at NOW?"

  3. I'm in the middle of Kevin Hearne's Tricked, and it was one I'd been waiting for since finishing his previous book, Hammered. I was also impatiently waiting for Allison Brennan's Silenced. I inhaled that one over the weekend. ;o)

    Lynn,
I picked up the new Katie MacAlister's book "Spark's Fly", the new Rick Riordan book "The Serpent's Shadow" and M.J. Putney's "Dark Mirror" and "Dark Passage". I've already finished Rick's book, I'm working my way through the first M.J. Putney book and can't wait to start reading Katie Mac's book. The first two were the "oh my goodness, I can't wait books", while the M.J. books were a new series for me that I started reading in the book store. The third book in her series "Dark Destiny" will be out in July and I can't wait! I love finding a new series and I just hope she doesn't ruin it by dragging it out forever by some not-to-be-mentioned authors (not you of course!).

  5. Kevin Hearne's fourth book in his Iron Druids Chronicles series "Tricked". Love, love, love that series! I also picked up Jac Jemc's "My Only Wife" which everyone who is interested in supporting new authors/small presses should definitely check out. I went to her reading last night and was just riveted by the chapters she read. A very beautiful, unique story from what I can tell so far.

I also just finished Tricked by Hearne and it was fabulous. He just keeps getting better and better. I also just finished Devil's Punch by Ann Aguirre (love her)! I also finished an ARC of Thief of Shadows by Elizabeth Hoyt (a historical and she is the only historical author I read anymore). I also picked up The Kingdom and The Prophet by Amanda Stevens. Her first book The Restorer gave me chills and one scene involving windows at night with no curtains scared me so much I had to stop reading for the night.

  7. Who is Kevin Hearne? See? This is how awful it is to live on top of a mountain 75 miles from the nearest bookstore!!

Gotta go. Must get online now and order some new books.

  8. Hunter's Rise is good, good, good, just like the rest of Shiloh Walker's books.

Fran, I hope you like Curiosity Thrilled the Cat. You don't have to be a cat person, but it helps. (Sofie is me, by the way, in my other life.)

Thank you Lynn for including Copycat Killing in your BAM cheer-up run. I hope Hercules in designer rain boots--he's a cat, for everyone who hasn't read the series--makes you smile.

  9. The Hunter book sucks. I dunno why you bother reading that** author.

    O.o

Hmmmm... I bought an Intrigue (two of them) by HelenKay Dimon and books by Thea Harrison. Lynn, Thea's books are fun. You might wanna try them. Awesome world building in her PNR books. Some PNR worlds lack the world building but hers are awesome.

**I should probably add... before anybody gets irritated with me... I am *that* author.

  10. I disagree with *that* author! The Hunter books are awesome :o)

I haven't picked up anyone new lately. I have a very select "group" of authors who write UF that I'll read, but not many. I still need that self contained, couples HEA at the end of every book, even if it's a series and UF that goes on and on and on abounds. Just not me.

  11. I just started the first book that goes with your Timeless... so far so good. It's the first I've read from this author.

Tonight I just picked up (within the past hour even) Quicksilver by Amanda Quick. Jayne Ann Krentz' Arcane novels spanning 3 different series of hers are a lovely escape for me.

  12. I'm currently enjoying 'Heart of Steel'. Have the new Hunters book by *that* author to enjoy next, as well as the slightly less new but still unread Robert Crais.
