PBW Holiday Giveaway #9 -- For Following

The other day I was talking with an editor friend who complained about how hard it is to build a new author. I tried to be sympathetic and give him some ideas, but we've both been around for a while, and we're well-acquainted with the reality. Aside from a few skyrocketeers, for a writer it usually takes years, even decades, to establish a place in the industry -- and even when you do, there are no guarantees you'll keep it. Ever.

The right hype will attract an instant temporary readership; we've all seen it happen to the writers the industry touts as the Next Big Thang. A considerable segment of the book-buying public wants to be told who is the latest Thang writer because, like most consumers, they respond to the illusion of popularity and the promise of success as an indicator of quality. If they didn't, we wouldn't have advertising, bestseller lists or industry awards.

What I think sees a writer through the dark woods at the beginning of their career is the enduring readership. This is made up of readers who really aren't interested in the Last Big Thang, the Next Big Thang, or even That Sweet New Young Thang with the Miss America smile whose face is being splashed everywhere. They follow a particular writer because they connect in some fashion with the work. They bond on a very basic level -- storyteller to reader -- and for as long as the writer produces quality work and the reader reads, that bond will endure.

I was thinking about all this when I was cooking up the prize for this giveaway. I would love to send free books to everyone in my readership, but aside from giving away e-books like Ravelin online that is simply not possible. But I do keep a private mailing list, and there is room for a few more names. So for the ninth PBW Holiday Giveaway, I have:

Four PBW Mailing List Spots

I have for each of the four winners of this giveaway a spot on my private mailing list. This means that if you win this giveaway, I will send you a signed final edition copy of every novel I write from now on (beginning with Stay the Night in January 2009.)

How many books will that be? Well, I don't know, exactly. I have four new books currently under contract, in production or pending release, so I can guarantee you at least four. I am somewhat prolific; I have a pile of novel and series ideas that I'd like to publish and no plans to retire anytime soon. So unless the Publishing industry collapses, you ask to be removed from the list or I get hit by a truck or something, I think I can provide you with plenty of reading material for years to come.

This prize also requires a little commitment from the winners -- you'll need to let me know if you move and your address changes, for example. Also, if you live outside the U.S., you'll have to alert me if there are any changes to customs or other shipping rules that affect mail delivery in your country. But other than that, all you have to do is walk down to the mailbox a couple times a year.

To have a chance to win this giveaway, in comments name a writer who you have been following for longer than a year (or, if you can't pick just one, toss your name in the hat) by midnight EST on Sunday, December 21, 2008. I'll draw four names at random from everyone who participates and put the winners on my private mailing list, plus send them an extra stocking stuffer -- a signed, printed* copy of my December Darkyn novella e-book release, Master of Shadows. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something from PBW in the past.

*Printed by me on bond paper and placed in a three-ring binder.

  1. I've been following Jim Butcher for years now. My bookseller friend introduced me to the Dresden series.

  2. Usually when I read more than one thing from an author I tend to passively follow. Meaning I always stop by their section and scan for something new.

There are a few that I actively follow. I subscribe to their mailing lists, read their blogs, almost live on their website, etc. Those authors are Neil Gaiman, Simon R. Green, Stephen King, and a couple others that have already been mentioned.

I've been reading the work of Poppy Z. Brite since "Lost Souls", which was longer ago than either she or I might like to admit. ;)

I've followed Jorrie Spencer for more than a year. Still love her books!

  5. I've been following Laurell K. Hamilton for about four years. Kim Harrison for about a year and some change. I always read everything by these two.

Your description fits my pattern of reading - I tend to follow writers rather than Big Announcements. Some of those writers are local to me (Kaaron Warren and Kim Westowood) and some are local to Australia (Jennifer Fallon) and some are US or UK (too many to name!). I always want more writer whose work I love at that level - it's where some of my greatest reading happiness comes from.

  7. Tess Gerritsen. I started reading her books when she wrote for Harlequin and I've never stopped.

Holly Lisle, S.L. Viehl since their Forward Motion days.

    And a lot of others...

  8. (Scratches head)...lemme think.

Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels, Martha Grimes, Elizabeth Crombie, Julia Spencer Fleming, Steven Booth, Susan Hill. Love the John Ceepak character from the Chris Grabenstein books. Your Darkyn series grabbed me by the throat since If Angels Burns. I love these questions you ask, they make me reflect and I've come to the realization that damn...I'm a reading addict!!

  9. I've been following Iain Banks since 1988

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've been following Terry Pratchett for seven years now ever since I read Colour of Magic. A lot of authors either bring out too many books to keep up with *cough*James Patterson*cough* or I forget but Terry Pratchett is the one that I always keep up-to-date with.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The writer I have been following the longest is probably Terry Pratchett, who I 'discovered' age 11 - 20ish books later I'm still reading his novels with the same giddy thrill. I actually cried when I found out about his Alzheimer's.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I've been following Terry Pratchett for years, due to trying out a book on discount through the SF book club. I loved it, and glommed. I'm also now following Patricia Briggs, thank you for recommending her.

    ReplyDelete
  13. As a child I followed several German authors of children's books but today I just look up every now and then if one of my favourite authors has published something interesting in the meantime. After all, since most of them are dead, there's nothing much left to follow.

I guess I really have to find some more recent writers...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'd have to say my all-time favorite author, Stephen King. I'm in the bookstore the day his newest is released, and it's been that way for longer than I can remember.

    Happy holidays!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I've been following all of your Lynn Viehl books for longer than a year, but I guess you want other names. There are so many, but here are few of my other long-term favorites:

Jill Shalvis, Alison Kent, Wally Lamb, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Jane Porter, Lisa Kleypas, J.R. Ward, Shiloh Walker, Jaci Burton, Patti Callahan Henry, and Megan Hart.

Oops, did you say one? At least I did not keep going. I wanted too lol.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tamora Pierce. I think I've read her books since I was 12.

    ReplyDelete
  17. That's a fabulous prize, Lynn. While I may find a new author because of buzz, I find more you don't hear as much about always searching around for more on books. I read what I like regardless of what others say, and I think many readers do the same. So many I've been reading for more than a year. I don't give up on an author easily as long as I enjoy the story, even if the current is not the best for me, the next might be as were those in the past.

Many of my longtime favorites are historicals authors I've been reading for at least 5 yrs, probably more, like Loretta Chase, Lisa Kleypas, Connie Brockway, Jo Beverly, Madeline Hunter, Mary Balogh, Carla Kelly, Amanda Quick/Jayne Krentz, Susan Carroll and Jo Goodman added 2 years ago. Some from many years ago are no longer here or I'd still be reading, like Georgette Heyer and Anya Seton. Now with paranormals and fantasy/scifi so popular, I've got quite a few more ad to that autobuy list. Some I've been reading for over 5 years, Susan Grant, Robin Owens, Lynn Kurland, Melanie Jackson, then added to autobuy from their debut books Elizabeth Vaughan, CL Wilson and Nalini Singh. Can't just name a few of favorite authors I follow, so many more I've started loving the past 2 years, like Patricia Briggs, Alexis Morgan. I'll stop now.

I have been following the following, some since the beginning of their career:
    You, of course
Nalini Singh, Laurell K. Hamilton, Anne Bishop, Beverly Connor, Deanna Raybourn, Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb (since her Silhouette days), Linda Howard (since her Silhouette days), Patricia Briggs, Robin D. Owens and J.R. Ward.

I've been following Sandi Kahn Shelton, Shobhan Bantwal, kind of following Lisa Jackson... All thanks to virtual book tours.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Off the top of my head, Amy J. Fetzer since 2005. She introduced me to romantic suspense with Naked Truth, the first in her Dragon One series.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous6:38 AM

P.C. Hodgell -- who I've been following for, oh, 24 years or so by now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've been reading Laurell K. Hamilton for three-four years solid. Lilith Saintcrow, Jim Butcher, Lynn Viehl, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, MaryJanice Davidson, Kelley Armstrong... and a few others. Those I've been following for more than one year.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Laurell K Hamilton for over a year. Sherrilyn Kenyon just over a year. Anne Bishop just 5 months. The Dune series (10 years) - Frank Herbert (passed) and now his son. Anne McCaffery (15 years)and now her son, Todd.

I just realized. I have a bunch I had better stop.

Lynn, I faithfully go to used book stores. They tell me your books go like hot cakes! They cannot keep them on the shelves. I had to put myself on a list. :)

Thanks for the contests and Happy Holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Besides you?

Also David Weber for his Honor Harrington Series.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I remember finding Minion by L.A. Banks in my high school library when I was in 10th grade I think. It's been almost 4 years since I graduated and I love her Vampire Huntress series like a dear dear friend (=

  32. So many books, so little time!!

In addition to you, I also "follow" Neil Gaiman, Nevada Barr, Marjorie Liu, Vicki Pettersson and Nora Roberts. And many more I am sure, but you said to name only one. (It's the new math!)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I follow Marjorie M Liu. It's the connection that you mentioned. The first thing that I read by her was a short story in an anthology. About 2 pages in I was so excited that I went in to tell my husband that if I ever write a book, this is similar to how I think it would be. There was action, humor and characters that I found interesting. That little 45 page story hooked me. I now follow her blog and yours. (I found you through her blog list.) You guys are like writing mentors that I have never met.
(And no, I don't expect brownie points for the mentor comment!)
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anonymous9:34 AM

I followed Robert Jordan for over 15 years before he passed away. We'll never know how the Wheel of Time series ends :(

    ReplyDelete
  35. Tamora Pierce, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Nora Roberts, Kelley Armstrong, Lora Leigh, Holly Lisle, Linda Howard, JR Ward, Karen Chance, S.L. Viehl and I could go on for quite a while on this topic so I'll cut the list way short and just say those are some of them in no particular order.

Thank you for the authors that you've suggested over the years that I've added to my must buy list as well. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Ursula K. Le Guin, and Marion Zimmer-Bradley--I loved her women of strength.

    ReplyDelete

Now I have dozens of author I've followed for years, but there are too many to list them all.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I wish I could say I've been following you forever, but I happened to come across you from another blog. I'm hooked now though :D

    Let's see...

    Karen Marie Moning
    Diana Gabaldon
    Anne Gracie (who is marvelous!)
    Kathy Reichs
    Iris Johansen
    a few others.

And some I no longer follow because either the quality of their stories has begun to suffer over time, or they've had a very public meltdown on their blog or someone else's. I certainly don't hold any author on a pedestal, but I do hope they're gracious in adversity with their readers as well as prosperity with those same readers.

    Have a Merry Christmas.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I followed Charles Sheffield, Isaac Asimov, and Robert Heinlein, until they stopped putting out new books, allowing me to catch up. (Heinlein has kept putting out new books after his death, but his output is greatly reduced. ;) )

I followed Orson Scott Card from 1986 until about a year or two ago.

I follow Steven Gould, but he puts out books too infrequently.

    Diana Gabaldon

    My newer additions:
Lynn Viehl - reading If Angels Burn was a defining moment for me

The other two authors I avidly read are Linda Howard and Sandra Brown.

    Terri W.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've been following Kelley Armstrong since I read Bitten which was published in 2001. I love the way she writes urban fantasy and how she can make me care for a character in a matter of pages. I'm also following her new Nadia Stafford thriller series.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have followed so many authors for years, that I don't think I could list them all here. The ones that immediately come to mind are JD Robb, Charleine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Nalini Singh, Clive Cussler, Ilona Andrews, and Lilith Saintcrow.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Anonymous12:09 PM

Wow, Lynn, this is so generous of you. Unsurprisingly. :)

To be honest, I've only been specifically following certain writers for maybe three years - and the first two? You and Holly Lisle. After that quickly came Tammy Jones and Catie Murphy and now also Joshilyn Jackson for a year and a half now, and you guys are my favorite five because you consistently wow me, and I know I can trust your books.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I've read everything written by JD Robb.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I'm dork enough to admit I'm a dork about authors...I have all my faves bookmarked and calendar items for all new releases.

Nora Roberts, though, is my longest running follow. While I've expanded beyond romance genre fiction, she was my first love of love stories. You always keep a special place for the first :)

Thanks very much for this gift, whomever wins. I think it's fab to know an author holds her readers in high enough regard to add them to her "list"!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anonymous12:33 PM

Christopher Moore. I started with his "Bloodsucking Fiends" and can not stop. The best so far has been "Lamb - the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal", but his "A Dirty Job" is really good too.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Besides you, Robin Lee Hatcher, Diana Gabaldon, Francine Rivers, Karen Kingsbury. And many more, too!

    ReplyDelete
  71. If I listed all the authors I have been following for more than a year it would by huge. Instead I will just list the ones I have been following the longest. They are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub, John Saul, Terry Pratchett.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Let's see, besides you...

I've read JR Ward's work for several years. And the one who made me want to write (and explains my urge to include too much blood, lol)...Stephen King. I discovered King when I was thirteen, and he warped me for life. Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Marian Keyes. Maeve Binchy, although my interest's been waning lately.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Laurell K Hamilton, Lara Adrian, Kelley Armstrong, Lynn Viehl, Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward, and about 15 or so more!

    ReplyDelete
  75. There are literally dozens of authors I've followed over the years. That's how I find books... pick up the latest from authors I follow then check out recommendations based off that. To pick a name, I'd have to go with the one that first got me hooked on sci-fi/fantasy decades ago (as in junior high school). Mercedes Lackey.

    Carrie Vaughn
    Jim Butcher
    Simon R Green

I'm kinda proud of the fact that I was one of the first to read Terry Pratchett. I knew back then he was awesome, too.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I've tried to follow Terry Brooks' Shannara series ever since I first read "The Sword of Shannara" my freshman year of high school, over ten years ago. (Has it been that long...)

Other than that, I have to admit that I always enjoy reading the works of J.K. Rowling and Mercedes Lackey. I only just found the books of Stephenie Meyer several months ago, but I know that she is going to be added to my list as well.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Trying not to get lost in my own list and in no particular order -
Robert Jordan, Lynn Viehl, Tobias Buckell, John Scalzi, Nora Roberts, Elizabeth Lowell, Sylvia Day, Linda Howard, Neil Gaiman.

    ReplyDelete

    Simon R. Green
    Elizabeth Moon
    Carrie Vaughn
    Naiomi Novik

    ReplyDelete
  84. Does it count if I read Jane Austen every year :) I have been following Roberta Gellis since Bond of Blood. I just finished Omega Games this morning so add S. L. Viehl and of course Lynn Viehl. Another author that is an automatic buy is Linnea Sinclair. I like her science fiction romances.

    ReplyDelete
  85. There are many authors I have been following for years, but two that stand out and who I read everything from are Raymond E.Feist and Robert Jordan. They are my first fantasy love, and the other one is the first long book I read in English :)

And then there are J.R.Ward, Jude Deveraux, John Grisham, Elisabeth Chadiwick and all the rest

    ReplyDelete
  86. Colleen Gleason-Love The Gardella Chronicles!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hmm. Lotta names to name, but for simplicity's sake I'll keep it to three...or four!

    C.J. Cherryh
(following for more than 15 years and still go nuts when she releases something new!)

William Gibson: (since high school which is more years gone than I like to think about!)

    Holly Lisle
(didn't find her until a couple years back (about 2) and I devour her books now)

Susanna Gregory (found her three years ago and I do love her medieval crime novels)

    ReplyDelete
  88. I have quite a few as well - Kelley Armstrong, Karen Chance, Patricia Briggs, Anne Bishop, Laurell K Hamiltong (though I actually refrained from buying her last book, so she might not count after all), Lilith Saintcrow, Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris, Jennifer Rardin, Carrie Vaughn, Tanya Huff... And many more. Looking at the list I compiled, it seems as if I'm in UF mode today :)

I follow many authors as I am a voracious and eclectic reader. Lois McMaster Bujold is one that hasn't been mentioned yet. I also followed Dorothy Dunnett while she was alive. I remember being so worried that she would die before she finished her last series.

  90. Off the top of my head - Lynn Viehl, Christine Feehan, Lora Leigh, Angela Knight, Brenda Joyce, Lara Adrian, and many more - just don't have enought time right now to name and remember them all.

    Hello,

this is Ana, from Spain. I have been reading in English for more than 5 years to improve my English. Honestly, I have read, basically, romance. It's an easy genre to read, I must say. I have to recognise that, at the beginning, I read almost everything I could get my hands on: Lisa Kleypas, JR Ward, Cherry Adair, Julia Quinn... ANYTHING I read was simply great, but I suposse I enjoyed more the fact that I could read in English than the book itself. On the other hand, I suposse I have also grown up. Consequently, this last year, I have been more selective. So, if I have to name a writer who I have been following for longer than a year, THIS YEAR, I would say ELOISA JAMES.

  164. I seem to be too disorganized to really follow authors. I've read most of the published work of many authors and will buy the latest works from several if I notice that they're available, but a lot of times I'll see something I think is new and find out that although it's the most recent work it's already a year or so old.

I've heard that it's best for authors if a lot of people buy books when they're new. I've been trying, but it hasn't been working well so far.

By following I mean that I have -without fail- faithfully purchased their backlist where I've been able to, and their new releases as they've become available.

  196. Patricia Briggs and Michael Crichton. I was really bummed out when I learned Crichton had died.

  198. Wow. All your contests are really great, but this one...wow.

Just one author? S. L. Viehl - that StarDoc series has me hooked but good. And the Darkyn are pretty intriguing, too.

  199. OMGosh what a fantastic offering! I read so many books and have been a voracious reader since middle school. I'll pick Stephanie Laurens as I'm sure I have all of books on one of my shelves.
