PBW Holiday Giveaway #6 -- Cool Characters

The winner of PBW Holiday Giveaway #4 -- Playing Favorites is:

Amethyst Willow

Amethyst, when you have a chance please send your full name and ship-to info to LynnViehl@aol.com, and I'll get your package out to you. Thanks to everyone for recommending so many wonderful books for us to discover.

I put a lot of things in my novels that are personal metaphors, inside jokes or other private amusements -- and I don't explain them. A couple of years ago some readers started referring to these hidden and enigmatic elements as Easter Eggs (ala LOST) and a few of you Nosy Parkers began hunting for them and finding them.

Here are a half-dozen you don't have to figure out:

Six Darkyn Easter Eggs

Each of the Kyn have a psychic or physical talent that is unique to them. I use or coin verbs as mental shorthand for their talents, such as Memerase (Michael) Dreamwalk (Thierry) Shatter (Lucan) and Painsay (Richard). I rarely use my shorthand terms in the novels but I sometimes illustrate them with a visual metaphor when the romantic protagonists meet for the first time. All of the talents have two qualities: they are basically predatory in nature, and they all have something to do with what the Kyn's last thoughts were while they were still human.

With the exception of Jema, all of the female protagonists have female names but male nicknames, and yes, that was a deliberate choice. I have issues with how women are usually portrayed in dark fantasy and paranormal romance novels. I left out Jema because in the series, she is always the exception to the rule.

Alex's story about being inspired to go into reconstructive surgery by the family gardener was based on the real story of my own uncle, who was disfigured for most of his life after losing his nose to skin cancer. He was a wonderful man and I absolutely adored him. However, his disfigurement frightened and disgusted people so he had few friends and rarely went out in public.

Michael's physical appearance was inspired by two sources: a photo of the back of a rather famous celebrity who at the time was barefoot, wearing an old pair of jeans and painting, and an ordinary man I saw at an art festival with the most astonishing white streaks in his long, coal-black hair. I found a reason to give Michael that hair and described the photo in a scene in the first book.

In Private Demon I mentioned Rev. Rick Warren's very famous book, The Purpose-Driven Life, as a personal joke after three different people all gave it to me as a birthday gift. Fellow faithful friends love to give me this book for some reason; at one point I had ten gift copies of it. P.S., I still have not read it.

Jayr and I share the same birthmark, although mine is in a different location. My sixteen-year-old also has the same birthmark in a mirror position to my own, which gave me the idea to use them as I did in the series.

For the sixth PBW Holiday Giveaway, I have:

Seven Copies of Stay the Night and Master of Shadows

To have a chance to win this giveaway, in comments name one of your favorite characters from a story or novel (or, if you can't pick just one, toss your name in the hat) by midnight EST on Wednesday, December 17, 2008. I'll draw seven names at random from everyone who participates and send the winners each a signed final edition copy of my January '09 release, Stay the Night (this will be as soon as my author copies arrive, which should be some time between now and January 6, 2009.) I will also immediately send each winner an extra stocking stuffer to keep them busy while they wait for STN -- a signed, printed* copy of my December Darkyn novella e-book release, Master of Shadows. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something from PBW in the past.

*Printed by me on bond paper and placed in a three-ring binder.

    Hi Lynn,
I've always liked the name Kate Shugak courtesy of Dana Stabenow. Thanks for all the giveaways--it's a lot of fun.

  2. Macbeth. There's something so interesting about him. :)

  3. I have issues with how women are usually portrayed in dark fantasy and paranormal romance novels.

Oh me too, but what are some of yours? I'm curious if our issues align since it seems like every time I have a conversation along these lines, the other party always manages to bring up something I hadn't considered.

I love Ayla in The Clan of the Cave Bear. She was great in that book.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Kvothe of The Name of The Wind (or Mr. Tumnus ... *flips a coin*)

    ReplyDelete
  5. Daemon in Black Jewels Trilogy.

    ReplyDelete
  6. My favorite character has got to be Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson.

  7. When i was immersed in the Dragon Lance chronicals i was very disapointed in real life that there were no kender. I would look up expecting Tas to be there.

They were an interesting race with no concept of personal property (they would find alot of things - in other peoples pockets maybe - but they did not steal things just found them and looked after them until the 'owner' was found)

  8. Jamie Fraser from the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon has long been a favorite character of mine. But there are many others not far behind him.

Talyn, from Holly Lisle's TALYN. Her first-person narrative is as much intriguing as it is entertaining.

Thanks for the opportunity, PBW. :)

  10. I adore Thierry Durand, and I think his seduction of Jema Shaw is the sexiest romance I ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anita Blake

    Hands down

    ReplyDelete
  12. My all time favorite is Honor Harrington, because she does what has to be done with the least casualties possible and sometimes pays great cost to succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lieutenant Angua from pTerry's 'Discworld' She has such a fabulous attitude to the problems of being a werewolf in love.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My favorite characters of all time also happen to be historic ones and both from books by Sharon Penman. Richard in Sunne in splendour and Llewelyn in Here be dragons. Another fictional favorite of mine is Aral Vorkosigan in the Miles book by Lois Bujold McMasters.

    Mieke

  15. The kidnapped hostage in Karen Robard's Walking After Midnight=Summer McAfee. Loved Steve /Frankinstein too,the ex-cop on the run from the questionable good guys.

I read Dark Need out of sequence in the Darkyn novels
so Lucan and Sam are still my favourites.
Similarly in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series I read Caressed By Ice first, Judd and Brenna still come first among many.

  18. Favorite Character...Raina Bowen from Driven by Eve Kenin. I loved that book and she just really swept me away.

As a voracious reader, please know how much I appreciate the way you portray women in your books. Strong women with vulnerabilities that don't run their lives.

Have a great day and I'm sorry to see you were bootlegged. :(

  19. This week my favorite character is Marcus Didius Falco from the Lindsey Davis mystery series. Also, I'm re-reading Roarke and Eve. Something about winter (sun deprivation and cold) makes me re-read my favorites. Theodora from Doris Egan's Ivory series is a good character for a winter day also.

You want me to pick one? Just one? How is that possible?! Well, I'll just stick with the book you have written to say Duncan Reever. He just seems so complicated, mysterious, loving, dark, handsome...What's not to love? :P

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anonymous7:38 AM

Cherijo! No, wait, Duncan. No. Cherijo. Duncan. Cherijo... uh...

Stardoc. :) Count me in...wonder if begging will work...

  22. Duncan Reever, major crush

  23. I know you're blocking comments on the bootlegged post but I think there's a significant typo:

"But the fact remains that you are using and distributing my work with the right to do so or my permission."

with the right -> without the right

Acheron from the Dark Hunter series.

    ReplyDelete
  25. One of my favorite characters: Miles Vorkosigan. Because he's so flawed and so unstoppable, and he surrounds himself with such fascinating people. (Vorkosigan series, SF, Lois McMaster Bujold)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Elizabeth Hoyt's character Edward de Raaf from The Raven Prince

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like Jaime Vegas in Kelley Armstrong's No Humans Involved. She's forty-four and her love interest is fifty-something. It's nice to read a romance between mature adults.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous8:45 AM

My two favorite characters are Kahlan Amnell from Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series and Cherijo from yours. :D

    Cheers,
    Erin K.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mrs. Murphy and Tee Tucker from Rita Mae Brown's Mrs. Murphy mystery series.

    There's something about a tabby and Corgi making comments about human nature whihc are both apt and humorous that I really like;

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like Judd from Caress by Ice a lot, too, and I love Cat and Bones together in Jeaniene Frost's Grave series.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous9:26 AM

Jayr. I love Jayr. I love the quiet respect she earned from the other Darkyn. I love that she loved a man for so long, but was afraid to show her feelings. I love that she got her happy ending with her love. . .now she needs to deal with her dad!

  32. Estella from Great Expectations.

There are many characters I love. It is hard to pick just one, although one of my favorites is Rupert Carsington of Mr Impossible. He is just wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have to agree with Beki on Jamie Fraser.

    ReplyDelete
  35. One of my favourite characters has to be John Matthews from the Black Dagger Brotherhood novels. But there are many more.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous9:59 AM

My favorite character is the one I'm currently "involved" with. I do enjoy how you portray women in your books. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous10:01 AM

Lately, my favorite character would be Mercy Thompson in Patricia Briggs' urban fantasy series. One of my all time favorite characters is Atticus Finch from "To Kill a Mockingbird". I mean who doesn't just love him.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous10:06 AM

Gotta go traditional and say Elizabeth Bennet in P&P.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Lynn,

I've always loved Vane & Zarek from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters series! Shelly Laurenston's Dragons-all of them!!! Love them!!

    Thank you,
    Susan

    ReplyDelete
  40. My favorite character is Jo/Olivia in the Vicki Pettersson Zodiac series. Keeps going no matter what fate throws at her (which so far has been quite a lot!).

    ReplyDelete
  41. Adam Black from Moning's Highlander series. He shows up in the first one and she weaves him through each story until he finally gets his own book, Immortal Highlander. It's a fascinating character study to watch him change and grow as the series progresses.

My all time number one Alpha Male.

    theo

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you to Kristin Laughtin for naming Ayla in The Clan of the Cave Bear. That's a fabulous book and Ayla is a wonderful character.

Otherwise my nod is a bit unconventional. I believe that a vivid setting is also a character. If that's missing, to me, the book reads like talking heads in a broom closet. But then, I really love atmosphere. So my favorite 'character' would be the settings found in books by Rosamunde Pilcher. I read to be swept away to special places and she really transports the reader. I think her books are magical.

  44. I love learning about Easter Eggs and inside stuff that authors work into their books. What fun!

I can't possibly pick a single character, or even a few characters as favorites. I've loved so many of them over a lifetime of reading.

Ahh, my word verification is luvull -- shorthand for luv u all, as an homage to great characters.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Honestly, I love every alpha male in every story I have read. But if I absolutely had to choose, Gregori (the healer) from Christine Feehan's Dark Series.

  46. Since you are blocking posts about the bootleg, I thought I would send this separate.

I wanted you to know I thought your post was very professional and I admire your courage to be the better person. You could have been very ugly and shown exactly how mad you obviously were in your post and I believe you would have been justified.

Your eloquence in writing always shows in your work which is why I am a fan of your novels. Your post also demonstrated what an elequent person you are.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous11:09 AM

Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my all time favorites, but it's very hard to pick just one.

Whoever said Jayr is right on. I love Jayr!

  48. Disregard my comment for the giveaway.
My fav character du jour is Linda Howard's antihero, Simon Cross, of Death Angel. I was prepared not to like him or the book. But long after reading it, he lingers.

Your uncle, your birthmark - thanks for revealing the background. Makes my Darkyn re-reads even more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Travis James in Tara Janzen's Crazy Mission series. He's a secondary character throughout until he gets his book, Crazy Sweet, the sixth in the series. I liked how his character grew as you followed him from book to book.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Right now, the characater I think I really enjoy is Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files. Of course that will change in teh future at some point when I'm completely hooked on another series.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Anonymous11:12 AM

Kitty from the Carrie Vaughn series.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Frieka from Angela Knight's Mageverse. The comments that the dog makes are funny.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Favourite characters? Oh, I have a whole bunch of them: Athos, Andrej Bolkonsky, Faramir, Anomander Rake, Alaric Morgan, Lord Evandale ... my own Arminius (based on a historical character) ...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Anonymous11:33 AM

Favorite? How long do you want to read :) What comes to mind right now, well it's Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs, Linnea Sinclair's Kel Paten from Games of Command, Bones & Cat by Frost. Actually, there are so many to name!

    ReplyDelete
  55. lxz, thanks for catching that typo on the bootlegger post. You saved my butt there.

ncancino wrote: Since you are blocking posts about the bootleg, I thought I would send this separate.

I just want to clarify why I turned off comments -- there are a lot of people who are angry with this bootlegger, and I didn't want my post to turn into a free-for-all against this person. I really wished only to explain what I did, why I did it, and ask him or her to stop before they get into serious trouble.

I know some of you out there don't agree with copyright law, and while I'm not in your camp, I respect your right to your opinion. What I don't want is to see someone get sued by my publisher because they posted one of my books on the internet without rights or permission. That's why I try to talk directly to people who do this and persuade them to take down the files voluntarily. No one needs that kind of grief.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I don't think I can name just one or even two. The characters I'm currectly reading are my favorites while I'm spending time with them.

So just tossing my name in the hat.

Thanks for the giveaway. I have a number of your titles on my wish list this year!

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorites change on a weekly basis - but this week's is definitely Cassandra Mortmain after rereading 'I Capture the Castle' for the nth time.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think my favorite character has to be Seth Quinn from Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay series. Actually, I love the whole family.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anonymous12:21 PM

    can't just pick one

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm going to have to go with Captain Frederick Wentworth from Jane Austen's Persuasion. While I've always enjoyed Mr. Darcy (thank you, Colin Firth), Captain Wentworth has a special place in my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Fave- Emma the Unlikely (and her guy, of course) in A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole.

I am totally not trying to be a suck up or anything but the guys in your books, Lynn, I just LOVE them, each in their own way. It's why I keep reading them, over and over.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm on a Dragonlance kick lately, so I'll name my faves from that series. And I'm not going with the usual "Raistlin" and "Sturm" answers (though I enjoyed those characters for various reasons, and found them annoying for various others).

No, I'd have to say my favorite character in that series was Laurana, because she shown the most growth. At the beginning, I couldn't stand her, and by the end (War of Souls end), I adored her.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I have to say that Alexandra Keller remains one of my favorite characters. She always has the best lines and keeps the big bad vampires from taking themselves too seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hm. I think I've said this before, but Cordelia from Lois McMaster Bujold's Barrayar/Shards of Honor series is and remains one of my favorite protagonists -- male or female -- ever.

    ReplyDelete
  65. All-time favorite character: Miles Vorkosigan

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lee Child's Jack Reacher has a name that suits the character in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  67. One of my favourite characters is Captain Vimes in Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. I didn't like him at all at first, but I gradually warmed up to him, and now I love any book he's in!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Always loved Killashandra Ree from Anne McCaffrey's Crystal Singer trilogy. I'm still wishing for more stories about her.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anonymous1:57 PM

:P Impossible to choose just one overall favourite, so I'll just name one at random. Nadia Chernechevsky from Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars" trilogy. She's so complex as a person, but seems so simple. I love how throughout the series, she never changes, but nevertheless grows so much as a person.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have so many favorite characters it's hard to pick just one, so I'm going to go with a couple of favorite characters from Anne McCaffrey's Pern-verse.

I have loved Menolly from the Harper Hall trilogy since I first read them in high school. There is this quiet courage and strength surrounding her that really speaks to me. And I love the acerbic and tenacious Lessa from the Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. Here is a woman who takes no prisoners. :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous2:36 PM

One of my all time favorite characters is Irulan from the Dune series by Frank Herbert. She is a very complex character. Her motivations are her own and she has a way of surviving when everyone else doesnt.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hard to pick just one - Stephanie Plum, Talia, Ward of Hurog.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Victoria Gardella from Colleen Gleason's Gardella Chronicles is one of my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I love Jayr from Evermore. I could really gush about her: her strength, commitment, the depth of her yearning. The tension in that book was incredible.

Sam from Dark Need is also a fav, especially her kick-ass, take-no-crap attitude. I love it when she pops up in other books.
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Anonymous3:53 PM

Silk, from the Belgariad by David Eddings. So in love with someone he can never have - probably because he can never have her.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous4:16 PM

Faythe Sanders from Rachel Vincent's Werecat series and Luna Wilder from Caitlin Kittredge's Nocturne City Series are among my favorite characters right now. But really, whatever I'm reading usually becomes my favorite character at the time. But these two are some of my personal fav's right now.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can't do it. I tried, but there are so many. I was amazed at how many crossovers I had with those commenting before me :). And how many Duncan Reever lovers there are when you were saying the feedback was to dump him. SO glad you ignored that advice :D.

Anyway, could you toss my name (almost said me :p) into the hat?

    ReplyDelete
  78. John Taylor, Shotgun Suzie and Razor Eddie, from Simon Green's Nightside series. I actually like most of his characters, they are all so colorful.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I love Kate Daniels and I'm a big fan of Harry Dresden.

    ~Jana

    Mr. Darcy- Pride and Prejudice
    Merry- LKH
Senneth- The Mystic and the Rider
    and many more...

    Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  82. There are so many characters that I really adore from a variety of novels, so I'd have to choose one from a recent read.

I really loved Katsa from Cashore's Graceling because she was so strong but definitely had her vulnerabilities. And from an older read, Reina (from Eve Kenin's Driven).

    ReplyDelete
  83. Nick Gentry from Lisa Kleypas' "Worth Any Price"

    ReplyDelete
  84. Um, a bit difficult to choose only one... right now, mayby Mercy Thompson.

    ReplyDelete
  85. As an adult, I really don't have any fave characters but when I was younger (this is going to definitely tell my age!) my favorites were the mystery series Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden-loved them both and still have all their books to pass on to my daughter one day.

    ReplyDelete
  86. My answer would probably change from year to year, but right now...I'd have to say Patty Briggs' Mercy Thompson.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Oh so many to choose from. Vanyel Ashkevron. Elizabeth Bennett. Harry Dresden. Anita Blake. Latest one has been Jasper Hale (they sucked me in... *grin*).

    ReplyDelete
  88. Ok so I couldn't choose so I closed my eyes and dug into my TBRMTO (to be read more than once) pile yes it's not a lot but it has all of my very fav. Ok so my fav character is Ellysetta from The Tairen Soul series by CL Wilson

    Jayr from Evermore

Among others but Ellie is my fav

    ReplyDelete
  89. Anonymous8:36 PM

Aww. Just finally got to Micaela695;s. I was going to say the same things. I love Tixie Belden, and Anne of Green Gables. But even more so, I loved Laura Ingalls Wilder. I think these are the women, fictional and real, that I set my standards against to this day. Cherijo makes the cut, again and again. So do Kelly Armstong's women, and I've only read one Mercy Thompson, but I think she'll be a contenter.
I just won recently, but I couldn't stop from commenting. I love reading what everyone says. It's nice to read book-lover comments.
Please do not enter me this time.

  90. Curran from Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series. He's my favorite shapeshifter.

  91. Anonymous9:12 PM

Sparrowhawk, from Ursula LeGuin's "A Wizard of Earthsea."

    ReplyDelete
  92. "All children, except one, grow up."
"If you or I or Wendy had been there we should have seen that he was very like Mrs. Darlings kiss. He was a lovely boy, clad in skeleton leaves and the juices that ooze out of trees; but the most entrancing thing about him was that he had all his first teeth."

I have two favorite characters Zarek from Kenyon's Darkhunter series and Zsadist from Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

    Terri W.

    ReplyDelete
  94. That's a hard one. But definitely Michael Cyprien from IF ANGELS BURN. I love all of those romantic whisperings he does in Francais to Alexandra. Romantic but lethal at the same time. Be still mon coeur.

    ReplyDelete
  95. just throwing name into hat

    ReplyDelete
  96. Oh, there are several characters i just love reading. One is Eve Dallas from J. D. Robb's In Death Series. She is tough & rough, but with a very soft center. She has been through hell, but she has never let anything stop her.

Another one is Anita Blake from Laurell K. Hamilton's Vampire series. She is also a very tough woman who does what she must regardless of what it will cost her. She never asks anyone to do something she would not do herself.

And the last one *before you delete me* is "Kathy" Mallory from Carol O'connell's Mallory series. She is a fantastic character. You do not know whether she is a sociopath or she has just been damaged to the point where she cannot truly understand the difference between right and wrong. She is tough, but at the same time, she is vulnerable. The character development in this series has been stupendous and you can see Mallory develop little by little.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Way too many to name so I am throwing my name into the hat.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I'd have to say Roarke from Robb's In Death series.

    ReplyDelete

-Sarah Brandt/ Frank Malloy by Victoria Thompson
    Eve Dallas/Roarke
    Amelia Peabody
    Thomas & Charlotte Pitt(Anne Perry)
William & Hester Monk (Anne Perry)

Okay, I like Eve Dallas too.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a win!

  103. There are so many characters that I totally enjoy in all my decades of reading. Ayla from Clan of the Cave Bear to Whitney from Whitney, My Love to Zarek from Dance with the Devil to Eve and Roarke from J.D. Robb's In Death Series. I'm sure there will be many more in my reading future.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I have about 4 bookcases full of favorite characters, so it's pretty hard to narrow it down ...

    ReplyDelete
  107. My favourite characters are probably - Miles Vorkosigan (Lois McMaster Bujold) and Marcus Falco (Lindsey Davies).

This year I read A Strong and Sudden Thaw by R.W.Day and the character of David in that I think will become a future favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Top three would have to be:

    Acheron (Dark Hunters)

    and your Lucan.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Lord Vetinari from the Discworld novels. He's just so intriguing and awesome :-)

    ReplyDelete
