First Look

I promised you all back in July that once we had a finalized version I'd share the amazing cover art for Nightborn, the first novel in my new Darkyn trilogy, and here it is:

That fountain and I are old friends, so naturally I'm delighted with it.

Nightborn will be landing on the shelves on March 6, 2012, and can be preordered online at BooksAMillion.com, B&N.com, and Amazon.com.

  4. The cover is gorgeous. I'm embarrassed to admit I had to look twice for the fountain because I was mesmerized by the blue-eyed man.

Can't wait to read the book!

  9. How do you do it, Lynn? How do you keep coming up with the ideas for your stories?

I am finally having a concerted effort and am embarking on my first novel, but coming up with the plot/story lines, ideas and even deciding on "decent" names is a bit like trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

Perhaps it will become easier with time, and once the story is a bit more developed. But right now, it's a bit of a "head-desk" thing.

Do we know the Hero? I want to know who it's going to be about. So happy we get another Darkyn Book. The Darkyn have always been my favorite. I'm super excited. Can we get a widget to countdown the days, hrs, min and seconds?

  11. Hey,
I've been reading this blog for a while but, weird as it might sound, I've never actually read any of your books(I started reading it for the writing-related posts and sort of got hooked). Recently I tried one of your free ebooks and really liked it though. What would you say is a good book choice to start reading your stuff? This one perhaps?

You think so? First time I saw it I thought so, too, but wrote it off to another menopausal moment. :)

Thank you, ma'am. I couldn't have asked for a better beginning cover for the new trilogy.

He's a very attractive fellow. The colors are terrific, too. Exactly what I had hoped for. Thanks also for thinking of me and my family -- you guys have really helped me get through a lot of dark moments lately.

Thanks, Beth. I'm really happy with how the novel came out, and working on it with the new editor went so smoothly it felt effortless. I hope that results in a great reading experience for everyone.

I have, too, Mireya. My publisher is planning to release this trilogy fairly fast, probably about six months apart, so you won't have to wait too long. Thanks for the kind words.

Lol. It's always an honor to make the lists, and the betting pool is fun, but I think this time around I'll just be content with getting some new Darkyn stories in print.

I try to remain open to inspiration from any source, which results in an endless parade of story ideas inside my head. There's never a day I'm not thinking about stories. When I want to write a book, I choose one that fascinates me and that I want to explore on the page; one that I also think others would enjoy reading, and then I work it out and write it down.

I am finally having a concerted effort and am embarking on my first novel, but coming up with the plot/story lines, ideas and even deciding on "decent" names is a bit like trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

The first novel you write can be a huge challenge simply because you are heading into completely unfamiliar territory. One of the most important things you can do is give yourself permission to have fun with it. I didn't write books that sold until I stopped trying to be Perfect Writer, and started being Writer Having a Really Good Time.

Perhaps it will become easier with time, and once the story is a bit more developed. But right now, it's a bit of a "head-desk" thing.

It can be very frustrating, particularly in the beginning stages of developing a story. If you keep at it, it will get better in time, but while you're working on plotting and organizing (which is important) you should also be doing things with your story that you enjoy.

For example, I always like putting together my novel notebook, and gathering up visual materials for setting and sketching portraits of my characters and things like that. I even do color palettes for them. If I have a scene that I can clearly see in my head, or some dialogue I can imagine the characters having, sometimes I'll write that down even before I start working on the novel. I've also recently gotten into the habit of writing the very last chapter of the book early, while I'm working on the first quarter of the story.

Keep at it, but do have some fun, too. Whatever happens with this first novel, it will be the one you always remember, so try to make some happy memories to associate with it.

You don't know the female protagonist, but Korvel, captain of Richard Tremayne's guard, is the male protagonists in this novel. The story also features Nick and Gabriel from Night Lost as secondary characters.

Thanks for the kind words. I haven't done a release countdown widget in a while; I'll have to look into that.

Not weird at all. I run PBW mainly as a resource for other writers, with occasional bits of promo for my readers.

Recently I tried one of your free ebooks and really liked it though. What would you say is a good book choice to start reading your stuff? This one perhaps?

I have kind of a huge backlist in multiple genres, so it really depends on what you like to read. If you're into dark fantasy and vampire fiction, then you might start with If Angels Burn, which is the first of my seven-book original Darkyn series. If you like YA vampire fiction, After Midnight is the first book in my new YA trilogy (and I have a new free e-book, Dark of Heart, that parallels that one.) If you prefer science fiction, StarDoc is the first in my ten-novel SF series. I also write romantic suspense, Christian fiction, historical and alternativee history, but those can be tough to get copies of now.

  27. Love the colors and I do remember that fountain. So cool to see it on one of your books.

Great to hear we get more Darkyn stories. I'm enjoying the Kyn series but miss the Darkyn.

Hope you and your family are doing okay.

He is beautiful. Although my son would say boys can't be beautiful...the one on your cover certainly is. And I love the colors. Looking forward to reading this one.

Hope you and your family are hanging in there.

Thank you for the advice and words of encouragement!

I've taken the pressure off of myself a bit by not forcing myself to write every day. I'm working on fleshing out a couple of the characters, taking notes, and trying to think of new ways of doing things instead.
