Sing Me

Today's assignment: post the title of a song in comments that best illustrates how your writing or your life is going right now.

Mine is So Far Away by Staind from their album 14 Shades of Gray, more for the feeling of the music versus the actual lyrics.

  1. Once I'd have picked Chumbawumba's 'I get knocked down' or the Eagles 'Heartache tonight', or even ELO's 'Don't bring me down'

Now perhaps I'd choose The Fixx and 'One thing leads to another', Grace Jones' 'I'm not perfect' and Robbie Williams 'Trippin'

I just hope I don't end up with these: Hunters and Collectors with 'When the river runs dry' or Elton John's 'Don't let the sun go down on me'

(All that lot are in my regular playlist.)

  2. Don't Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. :)

  3. At the moment, life and work would have to be the Veronicas Revolution from their album, The Secret Life of the Veronicas, though no-one is listening.

  4. Anonymous2:35 AM

    Hotel California.

  5. Anonymous2:39 AM

    Far Away by Nickleback.

  6. I'm bad at remembering names of songs. But I'm writing a brand new book and listening to MUSE, which is apt as the heroine is the daughter of a muse, and the story is set in the modern world.

  7. Anonymous4:12 AM

    "My Skin" by Natalie Merchant

  8. Anonymous4:17 AM

This one's obvious: I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

  9. For the writing, I'd have to say "Midnight Show" by The Killers, as it plays on the dark mood of the story at this point.

For my life, "Float On" by Modest Mouse :)

  10. 'People are Strange', by The Doors.

  11. Carl Orff - 'O Fortuna'

  12. "If You Could Read My Mind" - Lightfoot, and/or Ray Charles "Now It's Cryin' Time Again."

  13. "Stuck In The Middle With You" Steelers Wheel.

  14. Bram Stoker's Dracula: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Wojciech Kilar.

End of the Night by the Doors

    Tommy by the Who

  15. Anonymous8:16 AM

Staring At The Sun by the Offspring (mostly for the line "maybe I'm not there, but I'm still tryin'")

  16. The two I was going to pick have already been taken: I still haven't found what I'm looking for and O Fortuna.
So I guess I'll have to go with A Sort of Homecoming (also by U2) and the Taco Bell Canon.

  17. Oh, is that a loaded question or what?

"Guitar and Pen," by The Who

"Long Way to the Top," by AC/DC

"Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," U2

  18. I'm used to coming up with theme songs for my stories; not so used to coming up with them for myself. Hmm... I think I have to go with Utopia by Alanis Morissette.

  19. Anonymous9:19 AM

I'd have to pick Don't Think Twice, It's All Right by Don McLean.

"It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe,
    It don't matter, anyhow
/And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe,
If you don't know by now..."

I really have to learn to stop second-guessing myself through the first draft. Dammit.

  20. Radar Love, Golden Earring. We've got a line in the sky!

  21. Anonymous9:51 AM

changes from the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

    ; )

  22. Bad to the Bone

  23. Anonymous10:03 AM

Steely Dan's Do It Again. I'm working on my line edits from my editor.

  24. "Neutron Dance" by the Pointer Sisters.

    Great question.

  25. Anonymous11:09 AM

Walking With the Ghost by Tegan and Sara . . . my writing is always following me around reminding me of unfinished business lately.

  26. Lately, I have been listening to "Wisemen" by James Blunt. A lot. It's fortunate, given the volume required to drown out the Editor-on-my-Shoulder, that our neighbours are a little distance away. But I think if I had a theme tune atm, it would be Everything But the Girl's "Like the Deserts Miss the Rain".

  27. It would have to be Paul Simon's "Slip-Sliding Away," as I watch the deadlines slide by...

  28. "I can see clearly now, the rain is gone...
I can see all obstacles in my way...
Gone are the dark clouds that had me down...
Gonna be a bright, bright sunshiney day..."

That's for today. Tomorrow may very well be "Here Comes the Rain Again." Because my writing life is nothing if not bipol--um....colorful. Unpredictable. Full of surprises.

    Yeah. That's the ticket.

  29. "Working In A Coal Mine" by Devo

  30. Jim, "Guitar and Pen" should be the anthem of many writers. For the rest of you, first verse:

"All alone, above the streets somewhere,
Wonderin' how you'll ever count out there.

    You can walk
    You can talk
    You can fight
But inside you've got something to write
In your hand you hold your only friend
Never spend your guitar or your pen."

My song? Considering the novel stopped dead in the water while we handled gallbladder surgery here at the house, it'd have to be "Get Back, Jack, And Do It Again."

  31. Hmm...I think I'm an amalgamation of "Born and Raised in Black and White" by The Highwaymen at the moment.

Of course, there's "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfeld and "Big Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" by K.T. Tunstall and a whole lot more.

Fortunately, I'm mostly out of the "I Am A Rock," "Running On Empty," "Desperado", and "Here I Go Again" days -- those were late teens/twenties days I only want to recapture for the physical health of my body.

The soundtrack of that's an epic composition if I ever thought about one.

  32. Anonymous12:16 PM

Hmm, my life would be "Round Here" by Counting Crows at the moment. As for writing, that song would be "Give Me Novacaine" by Green Day.

  33. Anonymous1:01 PM

    “Lovely” by Suicidal Tendencies.

  34. This is a hard question, probably much harder than intended. I could get lost in song lists...but I think...after totally too much thought...I'm going to go with:

Soul Meets Body by Death Cab for Cutie

I actually had to Google the lyrics. I've been listening to this song a LOT lately and now that I know what they are saying, I know why. It's really my life AND writing journey right now.

Thanks for the exercise. Now back to the WIP.

  35. Anonymous1:13 PM

"Celebrate!" by Kool and the Gang

I just got promoted to a low level administrative role in the online writing RPG I'm part of. :D

  36. Anonymous1:39 PM

'Shh' by Imogen Heap - a really fantastic song, by the way. More like a poem.

'I'm crazy? What are you then? Give me an hour and I'll give you your dreams. Don't make a sound - shh - listen. Keep your head down, we're not safe yet. Don't make a sound - shh - listen. 'Cos I know the somewhere...somewhere...
Leave it, I won't go back. We've got to do it 'cos there's nothing left here. I don't care - what do they know? I've seen it baby and I know it's real...Don't make a sound - shh - listen. Keep your head down, we're not safe yet. Don't make a sound - shh - listen. 'Cos I know the somewhere...somewhere...'

Every time I listen to it, it makes me feel like I'm putting two fingers up to doubts and worries.

  37. Raine! LOL
For that I'm saying "Living on teh Edge" by Aerosmith or maybe Annie Lenox's "Walking on Broken Glass"

  38. My life at the moment: "Re-Arrange You" by Queensryche.

Writing: "Eyes of a Stranger," also by Queensryche.

Gee, can you guess what my favorite band is? ;)

  39. Anonymous5:30 PM

    44 Stories: Roseanne Cash
Oh Brother Where Art Thou: Soundtrack

Because I'm thinking about a novel I want to write instead of the one I have to write.

Also, I did sign in with my Google Account but it didn't do any good. Still have to fill out the dopey form. So instead I'll just sign my name:

  40. Right now, I'm feeling the feeling I get when I listen to Ray Lamontagne's "Three More Days". It's sort of the calm before the storm--a good, a little stressed, but everything will work out. It helps that I'm running on the endorphines from a workout, woohoo!

  41. Lay It Down Slow -- Spiritualized

  42. Anonymous9:08 PM

"Procrastination Station." Think "Conjunction Juntion" with a more awkward beat. . .

  43. Crosstown Traffic by Jimi Hendrix... My characters AREN'T cooperating with me!

    Youre just like crosstown traffic
So hard to get through to you
    Crosstown traffic
I dont need to run over you
    Crosstown traffic
All you do is slow me down
And Im tryin to get on the other side of town

  44. *Crosstown Traffic by Jimi Hendrix...

Either I can't hear what they're saying, or my characters simply AREN'T talking to me!

    *Youre just like crosstown traffic
So hard to get through to you
    Crosstown traffic
I dont need to run over you
    Crosstown traffic
All you do is slow me down
And Im tryin to get on the other side of town

  45. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
covered by many, but I prefer Nina Simone.

  46. I Wanna Be Sadated by The Ramones.

    \,,/ (>_<) \,,/

  47. Anonymous12:30 AM

It's a cross between Funeral March of a Marionette for piano or orchestra in D Minor, and The Bride of Frankenstein: The Creation of the Female Monster

  48. Dead in the Water by David Gray, from a new day at midnight about sums it up, I think.

  49. Anonymous7:12 AM

    For my inner feeling:

"I Wish I Had a River (I Could Skate Away On)" (Joni Mitchell)

But for what I'm afraid of as I finish the third book of a trilogy:

"Two Out of Three Ain't Bad." (Meat Loaf)

What it feels like as I work through the night:

"The Words Get in the Way." (Gloria Estefan)

And for you, it really should be that Beatles song, "Paperback Writer." (although I own those hardcovers of yours!)

  50. Hang On, by Seether...

  51. Gimme Shelter The Rolling Stones

    Gimme, gimme shelter,
oh, yeah, I'm gonna fade away.

  52. Stuck in a Moment by U2 certainly comes to mind

  53. Definitely Breaking Benjamin's "You"

    Promise me you'll try
    To leave it all behind,
    'cause I've elected hell,
    Lying to myself.
    Why have I gone blind?
    Live another life.

    You. You.

  54. Anonymous12:55 AM

I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
