Welcome to the politics-free weblog of Paperback Writer. Here we discuss books, writing and Publishing. Comments from armchair economists who feel we should be instead bickering with them will be rejected after I'm done passing them around to some friends and having a good laugh. P.S., all small children left unattended will be given an expresso and a free puppy.
Now that I've addressed that little issue, on to the more important stuff. My regular visitors will remember that I mentioned last week that I had ordered the deluxe print edition of Douglas Clegg's novel Afterlife from Cemetery Dance.
In fact I ordered two copies, one for me and one to give away here. They arrived promptly today, beautifully packaged by the folks at Cemetery Dance, who have so impressed me with their service, their product and the pristine handling of my shipment that I think I'll write them a fan letter. Publishers never get many of those.
Also (big surprise, as I missed this detail on the sale page) both copies of the book are signed by the author. Now I'm imagining Doug sitting there and signing 1250 copies, and just thinking about it makes my hands hurt. Doug deserves a fan letter, too.
As for you guys, in comments to this post, tell us the title and author of the book you're currently reading (or if you've hit a reading dry spell, just toss your name in the hat) by midnight EST tonight (Tuesday, September 30, 2008.) I'll draw one name at random from everyone who participates and send the winner a signed, limited edition copy of Afterlife by Douglas Clegg and a signed ARC of Stay the Night, my seventh and final novel in the current Darkyn series. This giveaway is open to everyone on the planet, even if you've won something at PBW in the past.

Having only recently found out that there are more than three books in the Earthsea series, I'm currently devouring Tehanu, book 4.
ReplyDeleteThe Case of the Stuttering Bishop by Erle Stanley Bishop. I picked up a Perry Mason novel at the library and was surprised to find that I love 'em. So the last few weeks I've been on a PM binge.

ReplyDeleteRenfield, Slave Of Dracula by Barbara Hambly
I'm reading "Sovereign" by CJ Sansom - a historical fiction mystery set during Henry VIII reign, while he was married to Catherine Howard. I'm hoping to finish before the new reprint (is that the correct term) of Lippi/Donati's "Into the Wilderness" arrives later this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the posts, particularly the virtual workshop earlier this summer.
Currently reading a couple of things...

I have them stashed all over the house, and read bits and pieces when I have a few minutes.
:)

ReplyDeleteI just finished Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, and it looks like the next one will be Rogue Pawn by me, again. Based on the number of books I see in B&N, eventually one gets it right, but I'm not convinced at this point.
ReplyDeleteI don't have time to read at the moment as I'm trying to push through editing my own novel. But I do a lot of purchasing from the awesome used bookstore around the corner from my apartment. Last purchase: Listen To Their Voices: Interviews with 20 Women Who Write. As soon as I'm done editing, and taking the GRE, and applying to grad schools and finding a new job. . . then maybe I'll have time to read again. Maybe.

ReplyDeleteI'm reading Elizabeth Boyle's Tempted by the Night -- a book that's completely surprising me with its wit, charm, and paranormal/fantasy elements in Regency times. I'm surprised by the paranormal part because there's absolutely no mention of it in the book's back cover blurb. Maybe the author is known for it, but this is the first time I've read one of her books.
ReplyDeleteThat said, it's probably a good thing that I was surprised because I might have passed on the book had I known. Instead, I'm thoroughly enjoying the reading.
Currently reading Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Very interesting and (so far) enjoyable. I was intrigued by the idea of a 75-year-old man going off to fight an interstellar war.
