Quilting Therapy

One thing that I do when for whatever reason I can't write is sew, usually on a quilt. Really excellent therapy, as it's fairly mindless yet comforting work, and it always makes me happy. Today I finished this quickie lap quilt:

To make the top I followed this YouTube tutorial by Valerie Nesbitt, which shows you how to make it in 40 minutes from scrap strips. I did every step the same except for the sewing after the last cut, which I skipped so I could get the long stripe effect.

  1. Looks great and comfortable! I've never tried quilting though. Is it hard to get into? :)

    1. Quilting is one of the easier arts to get into, Veeyah. You can start with strips or squares, which are the easiest quilts to piece. You can buy fabric or cut up old sheets and clothes (I made my first quilt out of old pillowcases and sheets.) Craftsy also offers a free basic quilting course online if you'd like to learn by video: http://www.craftsy.com/class/piece-patch-quilt-quiltmaking-skills/369?_ct=rbew&_ctp=45054.

  2. Geez...it would take me a year to get that put together only half as well. Beautiful!
I'm sorry about your cat. They are such an amazing comfort to us and losing them is so painful. Our daily companions are precious.

    1. Thanks, DeeCee. It really isn't a hard top to piece if you want to give it a go -- it's all straight sewing. And I know what you mean about losing pets. I'm still struggling not to look for Jeri every time I walk into my bedroom.

  3. Hi Lynn, lovely quilt. I made one like that for my niece's wedding present, in purples & blacks. She used to be a goth chick so it worked beautifully. I like this type because they come together so quickly. I'm currently hand sewing hexagons for a quilt on the grow long term project. I can't believe that only 4 years I wouldn't even sew on a button without moaning!

  4. Oh, Lynn, I'm so sorry about your cat. They're family members and it's as much a loss as any other. Lots of virtual hugs to you.

That quilt is beautiful! So simple but the fabrics really make it. You do such wonderful work :)
