NaNoWriMo Begins

Today is the first day of National Novel Writing Month, the annual madness during which fellow scribes around the globe spend thirty days writing a novel. The goal is to complete 50,000 words (that's 1,667 words per day) by the end of the month in order to cross the finish line and win.

At the NaNoWriMo site you can read pep talks from the pros, join in discussions with other participants in the forums, and take advantage of special offers from event sponsors.

To do my part, I've posted Way of the Cheetah, my how-to book on writing, online for anyone to read, download and/or share with pals for free during the month of November. To get a copy, click here. I'll also have a couple of posts each week during November with resources, freebies and whatever else I can find that I think may be helpful to you November novelists out there.

So who is doing NaNo this year, and how is it going so far? Let us know in comments.

  2. Up to more than 5k words now. I always try to get at least 2k per day until I get to 50k.

Thanks so much over the years for the helpful writing advice you've given.
Maybe one day these stories of mine will finally come together.

  3. I am... 13k as of last night. ~grins~ going to blow this thing out of the water. Helps that I've been plotting and character building for the last month to get ready.

  4. Thank you so much for the link to Holly Lisle's website. I didn't start my outline till November 1, but using the notecard system I was able to get to over 7000 words by bedtime yesterday.

    1. I know outlining with notecards is very helpful for many writers, Cordie -- glad it helped you, too.

  5. Oh my! I forgot this year's NaNoWriMo because I have been promoting my latest book, "The Golden Apple"! I read once that Nicholas Sparks writes 20,000 words a day but it must have been a misprint--20,000 words!!! Is that possible? When I first read that I felt so defeated, lazy and slow that I questioned myself for days. Now I've decided it can't be true. I think they meant 2,000--that's more realistic--I can reach for that. Good luck with your own 1,667 words today. I'm shooting for 2k!

    1. I can manage about 10K in one day, Faerl, if I do nothing else but write and my voice doesn't give out (I write by talking to the computer); but that's my top speed. Perhaps Nicholas does 20K by typing very fast, lol.
