According to a blog post from February 2010, I wrote: Speaking of real books, I was reading (in Writing Magazine) that scientists have actually determined what exactly, that "old book smell" is. Apparently it is "like grass, with a tang of acidity and a hint of vanilla."
Whatever the smell, it's intoxicating. Like Mike Myers said in "So I Married an Axe Murderer": "They put an addictive chemical in it that makes you crave for it nightly!" (He was referring to fried chicken...)
I love the smell of old books. It's just history rich, especially if you havn't owned it duringt he book's entire life span - who knows who has owned this copy before you? But having said that I love the smell of new books, that lovely feeling of having something so fresh and new in your hands Gaaahh I love books :):)
I had to explain to my 4 year old why mommmy was huffing books! My explanation of "they just smell so GOOD!" then led to a book smelling interlude, in which both my little ones agreed that yes, yes they do.
I love the smell of old books. People think I am crazy.
