I have not yet considered the artwork for the cover of my book. I just assumed that stage will come in due time. But, you have given me something to think about during the creation of my first novel.

I don’t hear much about the design cover of a novel when a person publishes it for the first time. Often, it is a topic that is not discussed as much as the characterization, voice and exposition, etc. It seems to be a topic that is not as popular or important during the publishing process. Or, is it?

Now that I’m thinking about what I want the cover of my novel to look like, I look forward to having that creative expression. My love for art is just as visible as my love for storytelling. I think I will let my best girlfriend take photos based on the title of the book. It will be exciting to see what she visualizes. We will then examine the photos together in detail and come up with something unique and eccentric. I look forward to it.

Thank you for making me aware that professional writers do not have control over what publishers put on their books. Although I am happy to know that some editors ask for input from writers, I can’t seem to agree with this arrangement. After all, it is the writer that pours her soul into the novel. Some writers may be fine with letting someone else choose the artwork for the book cover; however, I think it should be a joint effort between the writer and the publisher. Some may argue that editors of publishing companies know what sells. But, I know best what represents the story.

Your recommendation of sending a mock-up gives me hope that an editor may consider using the artwork I choose. My fingers are crossed.

I’ve been thinking about self-publishing more lately than going through the standard and popular publishing process. I don’t know if I will take the self-publishing route, but having complete control over something so dear to my heart is important this go around. I may opt to choose an editor and all that goes with a publisher for my second novel. I guess time will tell once my novel is finally complete.

Thanks for the information!Operaton Youhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10649635608758327652noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343238.post-7834707064483918012010-11-14T23:55:31.994-05:002010-11-14T23:55:31.994-05:00Usually, I browse the stock photos on DeviantArt.c...Usually, I browse the stock photos on DeviantArt.com and use Paint.NET (a free image software, similar to photoshop, and pretty easy to learn on your own) to make my mock covers.

I'm pretty proud of my most recent one: http://adorablyalice.com/projects/desert-on-fire/

I used four different images from the stock photos on deviantart and used Paint.net to combine them.Alice McElweehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17912328520130081827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343238.post-47163893382560385972010-11-14T12:00:12.470-05:002010-11-14T12:00:12.470-05:00Thanks for all these resources, Lynn! I prefer to use my own photos and artwork for covers, but I really like the French book cover art generator because it gets ideas going in my head. :)

You take amazing photographs!

~TRA

http://xtheredangelx.blogspot.comWendy Luhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08048944852796207898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343238.post-19774946385420696372010-11-13T17:02:25.921-05:002010-11-13T17:02:25.921-05:00I think the one on the right is a more eye catchin...I think the one on the right is a more eye catching cover. I know if I choose a novel from the shelf in Waterstones it HAS to look great. I know they say never judge a book by the cover, but hey...nobody's perfect! =)Rachael Journalshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06383240103036872416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343238.post-42739425787646098952010-11-13T14:38:13.753-05:002010-11-13T14:38:13.753-05:00This is a huge help. I did uninstall it to try Gimp (GNU licensed image program) and though it's a smaller footprint than Photoshop, at least for me, it's still difficult to learn. But at least it doesn't take up half my hard drive. Maybe someday, I'll even figure out how to use it!

BTW, on your Youngblood covers? I vote for the one on the right :o)nightsmusichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05984119792540771870noreply@blogger.com
